Both Brad Fittler and Billy Slater have been forced into some enormous calls ahead of the 2022 State of Origin series, with a total of 12 debutants across the 44 players selected, including eight likely to play next Wednesday.

They have come as a result of surprise form runs through the opening 12 rounds of the competition and injuries, but nonetheless will create an intriguing sidestory heading into rugby league's biggest event.

Here are all the big talking points ahead of Game 1 after both teams were named on Sunday night and Monday morning.

3. Why dropping the Fox was the right call

Josh Addo-Carr's dropping from the Origin team saw plenty of eyebrows raised on Sunday evening, with the Blues instead electing to recall Daniel Tupou to the fray.

But the decision was almost undoubtedly the right one.

Addo-Carr has struggled since moving to the Bulldogs for the 2022 season - of that there can be no doubt.

But even if things were being based off the form of previous years, the argument to pick Tupou - who last played Origin during the 2020 campaign - was an imposing one.

The Blues have lost Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell. Their losses have been well publicised, as has what they brought to last year's team. A free-roaming ability and more importantly, a mountain of hard yards out of their own end. Big metres at every turn. It was potentially the biggest single difference between the two teams last year - metres from the back five.

It's incredibly important the Blues found a way to replace that, and Tupou is about as close as they will get.

Tupou averages about 170 metres per game this year. Addo-Carr is closer to 100, and they are stats which can be attributed even during his time in Melbourne.

Addo-Carr might have been the right selection this time last year, but he isn't this time around.
