For the purpose of this list, we've only considered players who are known primarily as a five-eighth.

Of course, there is big cross-over potential with halfbacks, however, we've stuck with players most recently recognised in the six jersey.

8. Ash Taylor

Although it says halfback on Taylor's profile on the NRL website, there is no doubt in the world that Taylor is the best option at five-eighth for the Gold Coast. Taylor had, by far, his most impressive season since his rookie of the year effort in 2016.

Three tries, 12 try assists, 13 line break assists and over 185 kicking metres per game made for good reading, especially given his step back from the main playmaking duties. His defence also improved which I believe is directly correlated to the confidence he took from this season.

The difference in Taylor between the 2019/20 off-season and now is light and day. Struggling on and off the field, it looked as though his incredible potential would never be fully realised. A slight shift and a brilliant combination later and Taylor is looking set for a monster 2021 with the Titans.

  1. You’re biased. Wighton is still mostly only going to damage opposition teams , if they don’t tackle well. As he’s mostly just a running 5/8th.
