The Parramatta Eels have confirmed Mark Russell as the club's assistant coach for the 2027 season after making the switch from the Melbourne Storm.
Russell worked closely with the Melbourne pathways and pioneered the Storm's 'Road to AAMI Park' initiative for native Victorians to have a direct passage to NRL level.
His experience in coaching runs deep, highlighted by bringing the Storm Jersey Flegg side their maiden title in 2025 as head coach, where his players continued to push into the NRL side, including Cooper Clarke and Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown.
Russell has also held the head coaching role for the inaugural Storm NSW Cup side for 2026, adding to his list of efforts with his academy pathways mentorship.
It is expected Russell will take care of the Eels' defence systems for next season, in which he has built a strong reputation for his work with a high level of detail.
Eels coach Jason Ryles says he is excited to have Russell join the Parramatta coaching ranks, and credited his experience in defensive coaching and player development.
"Mark is an experienced coach with a strong track record of success across several high-performing systems," Ryles said in an Eels statement.
"What stood out to me is his attention to detail, particularly on the defensive side of the game, and the way he genuinely cares for the people he coaches.
"He's someone who values discipline, accountability and hard work, while also creating an environment where players feel supported and can grow. We're excited to have him join our coaching staff and contribute to what we're building at Parramatta."
Russell has also spent time in the Sydney Roosters coaching system during his career.
