Gold Coast TitansState of Origin representative Jojo Fifita is set to re-sign with the club, turning his back on rival interest and the idea of playing rugby union.
Speaking from Queensland camp earlier this year, Fifita rocked the Titans by admitting he may want to play rugby union at some point in his career.
"[Going back to union] is definitely there in the back of my mind – probably not right now, but maybe in the near future," the winger told Wide World of Sports earlier this year.
With his current contract expiring at the end of 2027, it could well have been that he was looking for a switch to the 15-man game at the start of 2028.
But that appears to now be less likely, with News Corp reporting he is set to agree to a new two-year extension to remain at Parkwood.
The extension will take him through to the end of 2029 at the club, with Fifita currently 23 years of age and already having 78 NRL games under his belt.
A career-best season has seen Fifita break into the Kangaroos 40-man squad for the World Cup, although whether he makes the final cut or not remains to be seen, while he also been named by Tonga.
He has not played international rugby league yet, although the Dunedin-born winger has one game for the Prime Minister's XIII and one game for the Maori All Stars under his belt to go with the Origin series earlier this year where former head coach Billy Slater made the surprise call to select him.
Fifita's importance to the Titans will only grow next year with the looming departure of fellow outside back Phillip Sami, who has signed with the St George Illawarra Dragons from the start of 2027, while AJ Brimson is also believed to be looking for a way out.
The Titans knocking over Fifita's contract extension comes at a time where the club are dealing with multiple moving parts, led by Brimson, but also including breakout half Zane Harrison who wants up to $900,000 per year on his next deal.
