Ryan Hoffman has firmly rejected the growing narrative that Michael Maguire and his tough training methods are behind the Brisbane Broncos' stunning collapse from premiers to second-last, insisting the coach's demanding standards are exactly what delivered the club a title just twelve months ago.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Boardroom with co-host Chad Townsend, Hoffman, who played under Maguire during his career, pushed back hard against persistent reports that players inside the Broncos camp feel they're being overworked.
It's a criticism that has followed Maguire for years, having also surfaced during his time at both the Wests Tigers and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Townsend raised the issue directly, pointing to a wave of stories suggesting unrest within the playing group.
"Well, you've spent time with Madge, Hoffie. What's he like? Because the notion is that Madge trains them too hard for too long and it's not just the Broncos that have said this," Townsend stated.
"I mean, I've heard it from the Kiwis camp. I've heard it from multiple things that Madge is just, he's very hard. He runs a strict regime."
The scrutiny of Maguire's methods at Brisbane hasn't just been talk.
His first pre-season at the club in late 2024 drew scrutiny after vomit buckets were seen strategically laced around training sessions, sparking concerns over how hard players were being pushed in punishing heat, with the Broncos publicly confirming they were adhering to NRL welfare guidelines.
Last season, Broncos forward at the time Martin Taupau reportedly 'liked' a social media post questioning Maguire's training methods amid a rough patch of form.
Hoffman didn't hold back in his response, drawing on his own experience playing under Maguire to back the coach's approach.
"100% he does," Hoffman said straight away.
"You're right, it did deliver them a premiership and it's delivered you success as well," Townsend replied.
"Yep. That's it. We had success at Wigan under him. He was assistant coach at the Storm. We had success under there. I've always been the opinion to play tough, you got to train tough and that's what he does," Hoffman instantly hit back.
"He doesn't ask you to do anything more than what you can do and he trains just as hard himself.
"You tell me the Broncos win all those semifinal games last year if they didn't train tough throughout the season and when you get to the top of the mountain, you got to train harder because that's what everyone else is doing to knock you off.
"So I certainly don't buy into he's training them too hard and that's the reason."
Hoffman and Townsend admitted with the training methods, that it does take a toll on the playing group.
"Yeah, I think it does. I think it adds a lot of frustration to the playing group as well," Townsend answered.
"When you've won the premiership, your standards lift, right? You're playing standards lift. You've come off a probably career best season individually and as a team, and this year, they just haven't lived up to those heights.
"The numbers on an individual level and a team level have been nowhere near where they were last season and I think if you ask the players, 'Are you playing or have you played as best as you played last season?' I don't think any of them would answer yes."
While the co-hosts agree the Broncos have a talented roster despite losing Payne Haas and Adam Reynolds after this season, the expectations are high and Hoffman suggests a strong call about his own expectations for Brisbane every season.
"Minimum for the Broncos is semifinals. I don't care what roster they've got what players they've got, who's coaching," Hoffman passionately stated.
"The minimum for the Brisbane Broncos, being the brand they are, being the club they are, being the reputation they have, the reputation that's been built back from the Wayne Bennett days, you expect the Brisbane Broncos to be a semifinal team."
Hoffman's defence comes at a critical juncture for Maguire, with reports suggesting the Broncos will be weighing up his future amid claims he has lost the dressing room, as he is off-contract at the end of the 2027 season.
