Gold Coast Titans' recent departure Sam Verrills is set to continue his rugby league career, but could be forced to leave the NRL to do it.
Verrills was one of five players to be a confirmed exit from the Titans at the end of 2026, joining a list that featured Jaimin Jolliffe, who is heading to the Super League, Phillip Sami, who is headed to the St George Illawarra Dragons, and the uncontracted duo Allan Fitzgibbon and Tukimihia Simpkins.
Verrills arrived on the Gold Coast back in 2023 seemingly as the club's answer to their dummy half questions, having played a prominent role at the Sydney Roosters over the previous four seasons, where he won a premiership.
He had done that at the Titans too, playing 45 games over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, but he fell down the pecking order in 2026, with the club eventually deciding not to renew his contract.
Verrills partner took a parting swipe at the club on social media in a sign of exactly how messy things may have gotten.
Love Rugby League League are now reporting Verrills has gained interest from the St Helens Saints in England, and could sign his next contract to continue his career in the Super League.
What is not clear at this stage is whether the Saints will be able to fit him in under the competition's overseas player quota rules - the Saints are also deep in conversation with Bulldogs half Sean O'Sullivan.
They can do both of those signings, but that would end Jackson Hasting's time at the Saints - something that is rumoured as likely.
Other Super League clubs are also believed to have expressed in Verrills following his contract expiration at the Titans, but they have not been named.
The dummy half was at one point seen in discussion with Canterbury Bulldogs director of football Phil Gould earlier this year with the blue and white moving to strengthen their number nine jumper, but those conversations were parked after the story leaked.
It's understood the Bulldogs have signed Freddy Lussick from the Penrith Panthers, but there has been no confirmation of that move.
Verrills has played 117 NRL games since his debut, scoring 12 tries.
