The Courier Mail is reporting that Brisbane Bombers director Craig Davison has been approached by a group of investors looking to take on the Broncos in 2023.

The news comes after broadcaster Channel Nine announced that it wants to axe a Sydney club in favour of a second Brisbane team by the start of the next multibillion-dollar broadcast deal in 2023.

The Bombers have been trying for an NRL license for the past eight years and this could be their big break, but talks are not expected to start with the governing body until it has been announced that they will seek tenders for a new team.

The Courier Mail reports that a few of the investors have a footballing background with four from Brisbane and one from North Queensland. The consortium of five supposedly have a combined worth of $50 million.

“I’ve been contacted by a group of businessmen who are keen to get an NRL licence as Brisbane’s second team,” Davison told The Courier Mail.

“They have asked not to be named. It is a confidential business group. They are successful in their own right and are serious about this proposition. They are crunching the numbers as we speak and doing an evaluation of what it would cost to fund an NRL team."

“This group has asked me to do some due diligence of the NRL marketplace in Brisbane."

“Are the Bombers still a chance? I don’t know that but there is certainly a possibility we can get together with these businessman and form a very robust bid."

“These men want the NRL to know they will bring their expertise to the table. The next stage is to seek the type of government support that is offered to the Broncos.”

The NRL are set to announce a decision about expansion in December. This could include adding a new team or killing off or relocating a Sydney club.

Redcliffe is seen by many to be the ideal base for a new team and an established fanbase is there for the Dolphins but Ipswich is also under consideration.

Broncos director Darren Lockyer has admitted that a second Brisbane team is inevitable.

“The Broncos have always sat in the board room and talked about a second Brisbane team,” he told Sports Sunday.

“Brisbane is a growing city and the Broncos have got it all to itself, I think a lot of the Sydney clubs think that’s an advantage for the Broncos.

“It’s a matter of time before there’s another team.”

  1. I believe there should be a a second team in Qld & Vic before going west.
Adelaide has already been a disaster, Perth works twice a year, it’s like a circus coming town… Send the Titans and the Warriors over there, see who turns up.
The cost of flying a team there on a fortnightly basis would break the NRL in two seasons….
Is there enough good players and coaches to pad out 2 more teams?
    Not from what I’ve seen…
    Try another approach.
Hands up who wants the team to relocate to Perth?
Have you got your hand up Rucky?

  2. Should be at least 1 more south east qld team before they even think about expanding to the west. I would relocate Gold Coast to Ipswich and whoever averages the lowest attendance and memberships in the Sydney based teams gets sent to Redcliffe or around the far north Brisbane/Sunshine Coast region with maybe even are 3rd underperforming club getting taped on the shoulder about a possible move to central Coast.

I’m not sure about the current stadium situation In Sydney but I really don’t think having the most prestigious clubs in Rabbitohs, roosters and even the bulldogs having no true home grounds to play at is great for fans. I think it’s silly that 4 teams share 1 home ground especially when only 1 team(parramatta) see it as theirs.

Making your home ground a fortress has been apart of league as long as I’ve been playing/watching and is a thing that fans and players really get into not sure what the old fortress of the roosters was but places like Redfern oval and Belmore need to be green lit for a upgrade so there can be true home games for all the Sydney clubs

  3. so I don’t know much about league because I don’t the current playing situation for a roosters not sure if your trolling or you are actually that stupid to think that Is a valid reason to say someone doesn’t know the game.

And yer your right the roosters play in there own district but what’s there HOME ground. you kinda just proved my point that roosters have 4 stadiums they cycle through every year so none of them become a true fortress and maybe if roosters fan actually showed to watch there team play during the regular season and not just grand final day maybe they could consistently stay at 1 ground.

Maybe you should stop going to cheap insults on people you have minor disagreements with because it just makes you look idiotic and childish.
