Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen has made a stunning announcement regarding his rugby league future, with the oldest player in the league looking to go around again.

Off contract at the end of the year, most thought 2017 would be Gallen's final season in the NRL but the Sharks stalwart has other ideas.

“Still flying, aren’t I?” Gallen told Triple M’s Deadset Legends.

“I am playing again. I haven’t signed yet, but I’ve spoken to the club.

“I want to play again next year. There’s no contract yet. I really want to play next year and there’s no reason I can’t."

With the recent news that Chris Heighington (the second oldest player in the NRL) might look to take his game to the Super League and Luke Lewis also off contract, retaining Gallen for an extra season might help the Sharks transition some of their younger forwards into the big league.
