The Rabbitohs have a long list of players still off-contract on November 1, and ultimately, that comes down to the club not being sure of their own salary cap.
It's believed David Fifita is about to re-sign, but the biggest name on the list, Latrell Mitchell, won't resume negotiations until at least March.
That leaves plenty of question marks for a club who have already been linked to Sam Walker given their shortage at halfback, although Wayne Bennett shut it down pretty quickly.
If Mitchell does move on, the money could be redistributed in his direction, with the Rabbitohs also needing to make a call on Campbell Graham and a host of young players led by Latrell Siegwalt.
