New details have emerged surrounding Ryan Matterson's fall out with the Wests Tigers and coach Michael Maguire.

According to the Sydney Morning HeraldMatterson first confronted Maguire about his frustrations about 10 weeks ago, where he began seeing a sports psychologist.

Matterson's agent reportedly first noticed he was unhappy in May where he found him the a professional to speak to.

It is believed that the Tigers were willing to negotiate a potential contract upgrade or extension with Matterson, something he quickly shut down.

It is understood that he asked his agent to request a release, however, the Tigers did not want to part ways with one of their best players.

The star back-rower reportedly told those close to him he isn't enjoying his footy anymore and "isn’t getting what he signed up for with former Tigers powerbrokers."

Matterson's relationship break down with Maguire is believed not at the heart of the matter.

‘‘My job is to make the player the best he can be,’’ Maguire said yesterday. ‘‘I’ve enjoyed the fact he’s risen to the heights he has got to. I spoke to Freddy [Brad Fittler] about getting him into the Origin space because I believe that’s where he’s heading as a player.

‘‘I’ve had conversations with him continuously – when he first arrived, when I first arrived – about growing the organisation.’’

  1. Here’s an idea. How about playing out the contract you signed. Keep your head down, try your best.
That seems like something that most players can’t achieve any more. Now they’re all so sad.
You can’t ask clubs to show much loyalty to the players, when the players more & more can’t play out a. contract that lasts a few years.

  2. At their usual sleazy best, the roosters backdooring the Tigers to poach back Matterson.
Shame Matterson doesn’t have the self respect and dignity of Mitchell Pearce, Blake Ferguson etc.
As Mitchell Pearce stated in as many words “Its great to run out and play footy with people in the stands”
