The Newcastle Knights have signed emerging back Hymel Hunt on a one-year deal, beginning next season.

The 24-year old provides the Knights with versatility, capable of playing centre or wing, while bringing valuable experience from the Melbourne Storm and South Sydney Rabbitohs.

“Hymel’s been in two good systems, in Melbourne and Souths,” Brown told the club website.

“He brings great versatile. He’s at home at wing or centre and can even play backrow.

“He’s a nice addition to our squad.”

Hunt made his NRL debut for the Gold Coast in 2013 before heading to Melbourne in 2013.

The Auckland-native arrived at the Souths in 2016 where made 44 appearances, including 18 last season, to take his total games tally to 47.

  1. Not happy he’s gone, quality player who will be good for Newcastle, i guess Souths just have to many outside backs and hope he does well at Newcastle.

    • Us South Sydney fans Penso complain endlessly towards our bitter rivals the East Roosters for their outstanding management of the salary cap. I think it is about time not just Souths fans but all Rugby League supporters start asking the question. When does Newcastle’s salary cap end?

After last seasons spending spree acquiring OUTSTANDING quality talent in the likes of Pearce, Ponga, Guerra, Ese’Ese Herman, Kenny-Dowall, Griffin, Watson to name a few, they have now purchased Tim Glasby (Melbourne Storm, 2021), Hymel Hunt (South Sydney Rabbitohs, 2019), Edrick Lee (Cronulla Sharks, 2021), Mason Lino (New Zealand Warriors, 2020), Jesse Ramien (Cronulla Sharks, 2020), Zac Woolford (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, 2019) and David Klemmer in coming days at 1.2 million dollars.

As Souths Sydney is much to proud to ask the Roosters financial guru for advise, perhaps we should be asking Newcastle for a few tips.

      • Minus Klemmer , Hunt and Gavet last week we were still 2.2 million under cap limit. Klemmer hasn,t signed just yet (but he will) for reported 1.2 mill a year so that leaves 1 million between Gavet and Hunt and some young local juniors coming thru. Should be plenty left for Segayaro . For the first time the Knights have a powerful financial leagues club behind them and very smart management. After what Bennett did to the club and 3 spoons in a row the Knights are building for a return to top 8 or top 4 days

        • Looks like they are buying their way to the top fourπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚. I don’t see to many Newcastle development program players. Fitzgibbon and the Saiftti brothers is about it. Newcastle over the decades have been remembered for their tough local juniors. Whats happened❓❔❓❔❓. Do the locals make more money in the mines or somethingπŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ€£πŸ‘Ž

Even the Roosters have about 8 or 9 development program players that won them a premiership but you blokes in Newcastle are a carbon copy of the Roosters Transit lounge during the 1983-1994 period.

        • “Looks like they are buying their way to the top four”

Did you really think that the Roosters had the monopoly on that angle Woody? I guess the Knights just realised “if you can’t beat em’ join em'”.

Pity Souths don’t decide to follow suit. James Packer has a BIGGER piggy bank than Uncle Nick so if we are going to forget about the salary cap the Roosters can forget about their advantage over their richer rivals from the cheap side of town! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

        • Well we agree Penso that Hymel Hunt will be a disastrous loss to our beloved Rabbits, even though we poach him from Melbourne, his performances this year filling in for our injury riddled underperforming wingers who are unable to defend, including Hamel himself, will be missed but undeniably will not be reemployed at our Glory Glory to South Sydney team any time within the near future..

Penso I like fruit and nut, Almonds, roast peanuts, cashews, wall nuts, hazel nuts, of coarse you may remember during the recent Facebook scandal that I definitely am not a fan of the $am-burges$ nuts, nor was the young lady.

Why Penso, my beloved fellow Souths supporter, do you wish not for me to associate my comments with you in the prospective future, yet you associate oneself with my comment, and also embrace my name within it? Could it be, that the true nut job looks back at your soul from the mirror within your dwelling each and every day.

  2. Newy… building nicely.
If Pearce gets back to his best they will trouble some quality trams next year.

    • You lost me at trams mate. Are they putting trams in Newcastle now? πŸ˜‚

Newcastle ARE building well like you say but they are still missing a decent coach. They could have had Papa Smurf back and given him a tram ride through Newcastle too! People would have reported sightings of the grim reaper all over town! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  3. My beloved Souths are losing quality in Hunt, Clark, Crichton, yet gaining no renowned players of any value that could bolster the strength of our squad for 2019.

Freeing up money to retain the Burgess brothers, Sutton and Cook will see no big name signings for the next couple of seasons. How will Bennett attract any Brisbane talent on arrival when our finances are already extensively stretched to the Rabbitoh limits?

  4. finally a player that can’t defend gone he’s alright in attack which is what newcastle need good luck Hymel

  5. Good lot of backs at the knights, it’ll be interesting to see which combinations work for them.
    S. Matautia

      • Think S. Matautia will move into the Second row and also think RossDog will be really pushing for a wing spot. Really do like Moga and Ramien in the centres tho

    • πŸ¦‡πŸ‘¨, you missed me that much you used my favourite “toxic” bait to get my attention! Just like I used “a plastic bag dancing in the breeze” at the end of my lure to get yours. Did you decide to give your two other profiles a rest?

Just like old times hey, Hasler back in charge of Manly and Souths going from one coach to another. The more things change the more they stay the same it seems.
