Valentine Holmes is set to quit the NFL and return to the NRL on a $1 million-a-season deal with the North Queensland Cowboys, according to nine.com.au.

The report states that he has agreed in principle to join the Cowboys after quitting the league last year to pursue his American football dream.

Holmes was picked up by the New York Jets and played a number of trial matches but did not make the 55-man roster.

The news of his impending return to the NRL comes after a report from The Daily Telegraph that he held a secret meeting in New York on Tuesday night with North Queensland coach Paul Green.

The pair reportedly discussed the prospect of him returning home.

While the meeting was kept secret, Holmes' manager Chris Orr is believed to be aware of it.

One well-placed source told The Daily Telegraph: “The Cowboys will be trying to get Val home. It’s not all glamorous over there on the practice squad. He is having some down times.

“North Queensland have room in their cap, they have money there. But Val is a pretty determined bloke. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.”

  1. Val to fullback, Drinkwater to five-eight
That’s a really good side they now have. Definitely a top 8 side.

Good reserve grade side with Clifford and Martin in the halves, Robson at hooker and lots of young forwards.

  2. I thought as part of the release he signed with the Sharks was that if he came back it was to the Sharks ??

If so, they would expect some compensation.

  3. Gee whiz easts must be slipping are you telling me he will sign for the cowboys and not at easts? Something fishy is going on did someone hide nick politis’s phone there has to be an investigation into this tooves would be saying right at this very minute.

  4. Someone needs to call nick to see if he is ok i must say i saw him recently geeeez he looks old…well one things for sure nick cant r o r t his age lol@nick politis for being “forever in souths shadow”…

  5. But lets all be honest here why does the nrl allow nick politis and easts to be millions of dollars over the cap? Everyone associated in rugby league all know that easts dont have a cap,you got to ask yourself why is this so?

  6. That’s now two players in their squad on 1 million per season.
Hope this doesn’t come back to bite them in the A.

  7. Another shattered DREAM. perhaps that might put an end to these guys leaving the NRL to chase the big American dream. If Hayne and this guy can’t make it, I cant see many others breakig through. NFL is a sport you need to grow up playing not think you can do it all in a year or two. Same goes for league. I doubt any NFL player coukd make it in the NRL.

  8. Well that counts you & I out from going over to the states to try our luck manwar78. if these guys cant make it.
Can still try our luck in the pubs over there though.
I wonder if any of those speedy NFL running backs could play league on the wing though?
Think a few have tried in the past but not successfully.

  9. ZT hasn’t posted but it seems Moylan for Matterson swap is about to happen. Sounds like a good deal for both teams really. Sharks save some cap space, get rid of a fullback which it didn’t need and boost its forward pack. Tigers get back a solid FB in Moylan for a player who wanted out. Better than getting nothing

Maybe the Tigers don’t need to replace Masters, have Moylan at FB, Thompson on the wing and Mbye at centre.

  10. Swa9…Sounds like a very poor deal for the Tigers to me.
The Tigers get a slow fullback, who was injured a lot last season.
Wasn’t Moylan going to Win Cronulla another premiership?
It also leaves Cronulla very short on fullbacks. With just Kennedy & then ?

  11. Dugan if he stays surely should be fb for Cronulla, he’s useless in centres. He left dragons because they wanted him to play centre he wanted to be fb and yet he only fb at cronulla if Moylan is injured and he’s not, which admittedly is rare. He’s still a good fb IMO. Idiot Daley convinced McDudor to turn him into a centre for SOO.
