The age-old adage of rugby league is that it is always the best team each season that wins the competition, but what if I told you, it wasn't as clear cut as it seems.
You see to win a premiership, a team needs to have these three main things.
- A good squad and depth in each position
- Good defence
- A bit of luck
We have seen over the past few seasons that the team that wins the minor premiership is not always the team that goes on to win it all on grand final day.
Here is what each team needs to have happen during 2026 to be a chance of lifting the Provan-Summons trophy.
The Dolphins: Fitness and playing for 80 minutes
The newest NRL franchise has had a few good years, not so much exceeding expectations, but have at least been consistent in performing well and unfortunately just finishing outside the top eight.
Heading into season 2026, many pundits had The Dolphins challenging for a top four finish, with the calibre of player they possess such as Herbie Farnsworth and Isaiya Katoa, The Dolphins could be competing for the top spot every year.
The issue in Redcliffe is the fact that this team still lacks the experience in the big games, and they seem to run out of gas when it matters most. Injuries have not been kind to the Phins either.
If the Dolphins are to win the premiership in 2026 they need to find a way to stay fit and healthy through 27 rounds of football.
