The South Sydney Rabbitohs and Queensland Rugby League have agreed to Wayne Bennett taking on an informal role with the Maroons ahead of the 2027 State of Origin series.
Bennett, who is a former coach of Queensland, and the most experienced coach the game has, will take on a non-contracted role where he will advise new coach Darius Boyd on team selections, strategies and tactics.
The role, per a News Corp report, will more or less see Bennett be an ear for Boyd when he needs it as he steps in to senior team coaching for the first time.
Boyd was recently appointed as the successor to ougoing Queensland coach Billy Slater, who stepped away after five years at the helm of the Maroons where he was successful in winning three series, but lost two home deciders.
Queensland considered multiple options to take over the head coaching chair, but ultimately decided to go with Boyd, who has been in charge of the state's successful under-19 program over the last two seasons.
Boyd, a long-term Origin player himself during his career, followed Bennett around at club level, being coached by the veteran at the Broncos, Dragons and Knights throughout his more than 300 NRL games.
One of the NRL's best backs of his era, Boyd is yet to confirm the structure of his coaching team, and whether assistants Ben Te'o and Matt Ballin will stay on in to 2027 after serving under Slater during this year's series, which Queensland lost despite winning Game 1 in Sydney.
