The Queensland Maroons have confirmed their new head coach, with Darius Boyd winning the race to the role for 2027.
Slater stepped down from the role at the end of the 2026 series, and Boyd has now been appointed for the next two seasons.
Boyd, who played 28 matches for the Maroons, has been in charge of the Queensland under-19 side for the last two years, and has won the race ahead of a host of other candidates, which included Slater's assistant coaches from 2026 Ben Te'o and Matt Ballin.
“It's a privileged position and I'm very grateful for the opportunity,” Boyd said.
“I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us.”
It's unclear if Te'o and Ballin will continue on in their current roles.
Boyd, who played 337 NRL matches across his career with the Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons and Newcastle Knights, brings with him experience at all levels of the game into the role.
“Darius has lived and breathed what it means to represent Queensland,” QRL chairman Brian Canavan said in a statement.
“His playing achievements speak for themselves, but what has impressed us just as much is the work he has done since retirement to develop as a coach and leader.
“He has built strong relationships throughout our pathways system, earned the respect of players and staff, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping young people reach their potential.
“Darius understands the responsibility that comes with the Maroons jersey. He knows our culture, our history and the standards required to succeed at the highest level.”
