The NRL has a number of excellent head coaches, many that possess some of the best knowledge about the game of rugby league. This list ranks coaches based on their entire career but favours recent achievements more heavily.

Trent Barrett

Head coach of the Sea Eagles is Trent Barrett, who took over after the controversial sacking of club legend Geoff Toovey. Barrett managed to return the club to the finals in his first full season as coach, finishing in sixth position. The Manly coach has managed to stay competitive in 2018 despite losing a large number of players to serious injuries. Barrett will likely continue to improve as he gets more experience as a club coach.

    • Player poll doesn’t mean much, most likely the Kiwi and Warrior players voting for him. If you look at Kearney’s win percentage in the NRL it is one of the worse of all current coaches.

  1. I like Barrett but WTF. How does Barrett make this list on this year. Manly aren’t the only club to have poor upper management.

  2. Barretts only finals appearance came on the back of Saints capitulation in 2017.. he’s not up to the FG pressure and his last media appearance showed this.
Remember when he often lashed out with his boots when tackled back in the day ?

    • What mate? You do realise we finished 6th on the ladder? Not impacted what so ever by the Dragons last season form dip. We sat top 4 for a good portion of the year and beat some great sides. 2017 we had no bad injuries and none of this off field drama, showing that Barrett is a good coach. No coach in 2018 would have Manly any higher on the ladder then Barrett. He is up to the pressure of FG coaching, that last press conference showed his emotion and how much he does feel for the side and the boys. I don’t know about you but I prefer a coach with emotion over a robot like Griffin.

  3. What, no sign of McGregor on the list? …..Cue Redv90 to tell us Mary is a better coach than Flanno…..(as if)

  4. Surprised to see Griffin on the list at all. Was this really voted on by the players?
Every report you hear about Penrith , is that Griifin can’t communicate with the players. Or, he’s driving players away from the club. Or, the assistant coach has to talk to each player as Griifin can’t .
So interesting that he makes the list.
