Cronulla Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon has bluntly labelled his side's performance as "the kick up the arse" the club needed after the St George Illawarra Dragons recorded its third win of 2026 on Sunday.
The Sharks came into the match without a loss since Round 16, recording a five-game victory streak which included a 66-0 demolition job on the Dolphins in July.
The Dragons were up for the fight against their neighbouring rivals, with a harsh admission from Fitzgibbon summarising his side's lack of intent.
"Footy is a simple game sometimes, and that was the kick in the arse we needed, to be honest," Fitzgibbon said in his post-match press conference.
"We didn't work hard enough. They ran harder, they tackled harder. I just felt like we just smart-arsed our way through that game.
"It was more important to them today than us, and that hurts. That hurts the fabric of a man. Maybe it's time to wake up."
The derby loss is a savage hit to the Sharks' chances of finishing in the top four, a crucial opportunity to host a home final and getting a second bite at the cherry come September.
With the Dolphins hot on their heels and sitting on the same level of points after defeating their own local rivals, the Brisbane Broncos, the race is starting to heat up.
Throwing in the highly impressive Newcastle Knights, who are missing key personnel and sit only one win behind both of the clubs, it's a crucial loss for the Sharks.
Fortunately for the Sharks, they have a somewhat easy draw in the remaining four games of the regular season, but as we just learnt, a side from anywhere on the ladder can step up to the challenge on their day.
The club will face the Raiders, Titans, Rabbitohs and Storm to finish the home and away season in finals football.
They will return to the Shire on Saturday to host the Canberra Raiders.
