Sydney Roosters centre Robert Toia is caught in the middle of his commitment to two countries for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

Toia, who is in his second NRL season, previously played for Tonga in 2025 after winning the Dally M Rookie of the Year last season.

He has followed up his rookie season with an impressive season, building a reputation as one of the best centres in the NRL for his elite defence and combination with Mark Nawaqanitawase.

Australian and Tongan officials have received commitments from Toia prior to Kevin Walters revealing the Kangaroos squad on Monday, according to The Daily Telegraph.

This has left both camps confused about which side Toia will play for when the competition begins on October 15.

There is competition for the Kangaroos centre spots, with Toia also in the mix with Brisbane Broncos star Kotoni Staggs, Grand Final matchup Bradman Best from the Newcastle Knights, and Latrell Mitchell from the Rabbitohs.

It is also believed that Jack Bostock and Tom Trbojevic are in consideration in the backline, with Trbojevic likely considered for a spot on the wing.

Both Australia and Tonga haven't pressed Toia about who he will play for in the World Cup this week, as he is focusing on the Grand Final.

With Dylan Edwards set for knee surgery after sustaining a PCL injury in the preliminary final against the Knights, James Tedesco is the favourite to play fullback for the Kangaroos.

Reece Walsh is expected to be cleared ahead of the start of the tournament after being on the sidelines post-ankle surgery.

Sam Walker is in the mix for the Kangaroos halfback spot with Mitchell Moses after Nathan Cleary recently underwent his second surgery, this time on his right foot.

Reece Robson and Lindsay Collins will also be considered for the Kangaroos side.

The 2026 Rugby League World Cup will begin on October 15 when Australia play New Zealand at Allianz Stadium.
