David Furner

South Sydney have lined up David Furner as their replacement for Anthony Seibold should the current coach decide to take up an offer at the Brisbane Broncos in 2020.

Seibold has yet to re-sign with the Rabbitohs beyond the 2019 season as he is in contention to replace Wayne Bennett at the Broncos in 2020.

The Rabbitohs have given Seibold until the end of the month to re-sign with the club. Should he decline, his position would be untenable and he could be replaced by Furner.

Furner is currently an assistant coach at the Rabbitohs. He previously coached Canberra between 2009 to 2013.

The former Canberra forward wasΒ recently appointed coach of Leeds but has a get-out clause in his deal.

  1. If this is true AND Seibold goes, Souths are screwed! Perhaps, since the Sea Eagles don’t want him, Souths can send out an SOS to Geoff Toovey? 🎣

  2. This is fabulous news. Seibold showed his inexperience during this years semi-final campaign, which he failed miserably. The Sydney Roosters were superb in the preliminary, however even the commentary of channel Nine, claimed that he brought nothing new to Souths in that vital part of the season. Seibold’s artillery was exactly the same throughout the premiership proper. He had nothing up his sleeve to combat the elite sides of the competition vying for the Premiership. Perhaps in time he may have learnt a valuable lesson to counteract our failure this season.

All the great rookie coaches in recent history, who prevailed with premiership glory in their inarguable first season, in the likes of Hagen, Stuart and Robinson had all the answers instantly and their teams had various game plans to fall back on.

Seibolds handling of the Burgess fiasco, who deserved to be punished for his facebook account causing so much disruption towards our finals series was non existent and contributed to our downfall with the ignorant answers coming from the mouth of Seibold. Souths are to soft to even fine Burgess for the trouble he brought to the Rabbits during that vital time. A grand final was there to be captured, unfortunately our flasher ruined ALL our chances along with Seibold lack of a reasonable response.

Good luck Brisbane we will be pleasantly grateful for enticing this traitor back to where he belongs, in the backward state of Queensland. Why Souths hierarchy did not have the foreknowledge of this situation to unfold, with the blow in Queensland rabbit always only using our club to gain his end goal. A Broncos job being reunited with his best comrade White.

    • Just when I thought you had gone into hibernation for the off-season the chrysalis opens and you STILL haven’t grown all your feathers! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    • You raise some very good points mate. But then again, maybe it just takes time. If I was in charge of Souths, I’d give him another year. Last season on paper your roster wasn’t all crash hot. Maybe with guys like Jennings, Campbell Graham and Murray having another year under their belt, you could go that step further to the big dance. Brisbane is a big problem for you though, and if he signs on for 2020 at the broncos, I’d let him go earlier. Just like the tigers, a year with a coach that isn’t ‘on the bus’ can hurt a club massively.

      • sydneyroosta meet Russ. Russ meet sydneyroosta. sydneyroosta, Russ is a Rooster in a Rabbit suit. ALL profiles on this site are aware of this and have called him out repeatedly. All Russ does is wax lyrical over the Roosters while pouring petrol and lighting a match to Souths. So no, he’s not a Souths supporter but a Rooster’s stooge moonlighting as a Rabbitohs supporter for the Roosters propaganda machine.

        • Firstly my fellow South Sydney Rabbitoh supporters, I love the Rabbits and would never attempt any destruction to inflame or implode the club I cherish.

We are rebuilding, although it certainly appears that our rebuild is, in fact in the process of being knocked down. Seibold with his selfishness, is destroying the Pride of the League. We should follow the wise path of our dreaded neighbors, the Sydney Roosters who have shown the Rugby League world how to be successful. Their dominance, is based upon a young super coach who has commited to a long term deal, this with Seibold was our response to the great enemy Easts, but his hidden agenda was always Brisbane, nevertheless, this Queenslander by emigrating back to Queensland, has served us with a few uppercuts that will set our magnificent club back 5yrs.

If the rumor is correct that old man Bennett, is heading our way, to be the savior towards the Rabbitohs, then our future is doomed, for a sad and brutal demise. He is already in the Guineas Book of Records as the eldest coach in the Leagues History. At best he will give us two years, with an abundance thrashings. His defensive technique which was his trump card has long been evaporated into his sweaty frustrated hands.

        • I do respect that you can keep your cool under an intense spotlight but it still doesn’t change the facts that ALL here are aware of. Are you sure you aren’t kettles (the ancient Melbourne Storm elder) who had a shrine to Cooper Cronk and perhaps followed him across to the Roosters? Am I getting warm kettles?

  3. NO No please not Furner , i agree get rid of Seibold even if he misses the Bronco job obviously doesn’t want to be here, anyway please not Furner , Demetriou would be great i reckon, or even a direct swap with Bennett, that couldn’t be that bad surely, just when Souths started to look strong in coaching this happens, i also expressed my doubts about his coaching in the finals, but that is the learning curve you sometimes need, he will be a better coach from the experience.

    • NO NO not Furner, he is not a ”winner” as his record shows. Souths should get Demetriou or that guy (can’t think of his name at the moment) who was assistant at the Storm but is shifting to the Roosters for 2019. Although these two guys are not ”winners” yet Furner has had his chance.

    • If Furner gets the go ahead Penso then that Ron Coote πŸ† will be looking extra great in the Roosters cabinet of victories. I think that if the Roosters vs Rabbits cup should go on the line if they play in the semis also. If that was the case then we would of won the cup on a countback as defending Ron Coote cup holders. Aggregate Score for this year including the preliminary final is 44-44 all draw which means unofically you guys have our cup. Now give it back Penso!!! Now!!!🎯🎱πŸ’ͺπŸ€£πŸ‘πŸŽ±πŸŽ―

      • No , you can’t have everything Woody, but i’ll make a deal with you if you like, you can have the prestigious Ron Coote cup for a direct swap with the Prem trophy, ok?

If Furner gets the coaching gig I believe what you said will be correct, surely Souths arn’t serious about Furner, tell me it isn’t so.

        • Mate if I was a Souths fan I would be looking at jumping ship towards the Roosters camp. It will end up becoming a Trent Barrett at Manly saga with Furner. Don’t you just love this off season merry-go-round, this time last season it was the halves, merry-go-round. back to the πŸ† Ron Coote CupπŸ†We want it next season. You realise that we both have won 6 cups each, so next season someone gets the jump. Souths might win the comp next season but not if Furner is running the show. There is a pattern of premiership winners since 2012 that shows Souths might be the next premiers
          2012 Melbourne, 2013 Roosters, 2014 Souths
2017 Melbourne, 2018 Roosters, 2019 ??????six letters fit Souths or Chooks🎱🎱🎱🎱🎱🎱

        • Like the way your thinking there Woody, your theory on the next premiership has merit and thanks for the info on the prestigious Ron Coote cup, didn’t know it was 6 all, but you will get all the chocolates if Furner is coach, nothing against him personally just think he is not the answer, as for jumping ship to you know who, MATE, rather put my hand in a blender.

      • Come now old chook, isn’t an invisible ceiling the salary cap enough of an advantage? You really can’t go changing the goal posts to suit yourself every year. Souths take out the Ron Coote Cup this year 40 – 32.

As for the “Roosters cabinet of victories” well, it’s still a little like “Old Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard” compared to Souths I’m afraid. Don’t forget your 2013 and 2018 premierships and minor premierships in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 have all been stripped by Reg for “salary cap irregularities”. That leaves Eastern Suburbs Roosters with 11 premierships and just the ONE premiership for the new NRL entity the Sydney Roosters in 2002. So you still need another 20 premierships in your trophy cabinet to get where Souths are right now!

No wonder you are so desperate to pick up all the “Ron Coote Cups” you can lay your hands on! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

        • Reggie Rabbit look the Sydney Roosters are registered with the NRL as Eastern Suburbs but our marketing name is Sydney, we are still the exact same club as 1908. Its a bit like a person changing their name on the birth certificate but they can’t change the person. Still looks the same (unless they do a Oxford St swap of genders) walks the same speaks the same but like the Roosters change the name only. But in the file cabinet at the NRL head quarters, they have not even changed their name. They are not a new entity merged. They are registered as Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Football Club. = 14 premierships, 15 runner ups and 20 Minor Premierships and 6 Ron Coote Cups. We have no salary cap irregularities, if we did do you think that the stringent auditor Ian Schubert who absolutely loves the Chooks and is one of our all time super hero’s and handed us the trophy on grand final night, do you think he would of given us the premiership trophy if he was covering up for us. NO, OF COARSE NOT Reggie Reagan. I was at the ground when the Shoe handed them the trophy and from where I was sitting it looked like he either had a really bad cold and he had a couple of packs of tissues in his pockets or he has been working out on his thighs. Either way we love ya Uncle Nick and so does IanπŸ’ͺπŸ€£πŸ‘πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£

        • Woody, my eyes! My eyes! No paragraphs! Sorry, I couldn’t read a word of that old mate. Mind typing it out again? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

    • Agreed boys. If Furner takes over at Souths while Des takes over at Manly Souths and Manly could change places and the universe will be out of kilter!

It’s not looking good for Souths if this story is right. Backing a coach into a corner with an ultimatum might not have been the best strategy.

“…the Rabbitohs have given current coach Anthony Seibold until the end of this month to decide whether he will extend his contract at the club beyond the end of 2019.

Seibold is expected to say no, as he is eyeing the Broncos job, which is uncertain due to Wayne Bennett’s shaky relationship with the club.”

  4. I thought Furner organized there attack, from were i sat they were awesome, it was there
lack of outside backs that let them down in defence.

    • that’s what I heard as well… just need more starch in defence (get the twins hitting with their massive shoulders) and teach the outside backs when to slide as opposed to simply running in..

  5. Didn’t Souths get rid of Madge and brought in Seibold as part of revamping to their coaching structure? I don’t think Seibold has done much, Souths have no real new signings, fat slow backs and the Burger Brothers who play 60 minutes between the 3 of them. A gig at the Broncos is a no brainer – Easy gig for any coach

    • .Sam and the burger twin bros have a half a brain between then to, One gets his head split open like a water melon and they both front up the next week with a shaved head, while Sam likes to show his head off on the face book to an Eastern Suburbs District rugby League Football Club/Sydney Roosters lady fan. πŸ”πŸ‡πŸ”πŸ‡πŸ”πŸ‡

    • Insightful coaching tips and club assessments brought to you by Miss Polly, her dolly and Sukey (suechi) take it off again. Now back to our regular programming…

Hey, you nursery rhyme masquerading as a Rugby League opinion, if being the Broncos head coaching is an “Easy gig for any coach” tell me WHY is Bennett being run out of town?

  6. I wouldn’t even have given him a ultimatum.. he was offered an extension and turned it down (very disrespectful for a rookie coach – IMO).
As for his replacement I have NFI

  7. Too much bias from some people on here.

Seibold did a great job in his first year – took them to semi’s even though they had some outside distractions. Added to that, they lost to a full strength roosters side that had the week off to freshen up and the match wasn’t a high scoring game either. Finishing touches were not there but they were not entirely poor either – its a long season and coming up against the roosters with their roster and week off was always going to be tough – for any team in the NRL.

In regards to the situation – stupid Rabbitohs management. Why give the guy a 1 year deal? he is a rookie coach and you want proof in a year! Added to that, if you know that he attended the Brocnos interview, then pull the deal from him straight away, Seibold is obviously not wanting to stay long term so its a bad investment and bad choice. What make it worse is that Rabbitohs management are waiting for him to make the call. The management should be making the call. Either you in or good bye and all the best.

As for Seibold as a coach, he did well this year with all things considered. As for his loyalty to the Rabbits – no one knows what his plans were and if they were known to management but management knows he interviewed with another club, that should be enough.

I’m sure i’ll cop flak as Manly have/are going through the motions but some of these NRL clubs are just stupid when it comes to management. You can see why the Roosters are a strong club. No BS, here’s your deal and some brown lunch bags, now play/coach or get out of here.

    • get ya facts right , he was given 2 years (which is reasonable given it was his first crack as a head coach)

      • whether it was 1 or 2 – its not enough to establish yourself as a 1st grade coach and not with all the drama that unfolded at Souths – like it or hate it – poor management.

        • +1 to 1eyedrabbit.

I respect your opinion and insight eagle85 as always but you left your stumps wide open then.

No amount of managerial wrangling would have changed Seibold’s mind btw. Typical QLDer, loyal to QLD above all other concerns.

Well, it appears done and dusted now. No choice but to move on and hope for the best.
