Uncertainty hovers over the role star prop David Klemmer will play in Wednesday's decisive third State of Origin clash.

After facing a nervous wait just to be named in the Blues' squad, the 25-year-old must now prove he is worthy of a starting position after overcoming a broken wrist.

Klemmer returned from the injury for the Knights' round 15 win over the Broncos, playing 63 minutes and performing strongly.

New South Wales coach Brad Fittler said many factors must be taken into consideration before finalising the lineup.

"I'm not going to give you the secrets, but we sit down a lot and talk about it," Fittler told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"It's a big part of it. It's a tough job [starting].

"You need to win those early victories.

"Given Klemmer comes back into the side, it's very different to having Tariq there.

"He played a different role in Perth and it makes things different and things will happen differently.

"We've got to make sure it's positive and everyone does their job and works together well."

The Blues will be aiming to win their second straight Origin series and just their third since 2005.
