The Newcastle Knights are ramping up their bid to sign Cronulla Sharks star Jack Bird, offering him a $2.7 million deal and the opportunity to play five-eighth.

Channel 7 has reported that the Knights have tabled a three-year, $2.7 million, deal to try and lure Bird aware from the Shire.

Not only are the Knights offering more money per season than the Sharks, they are also offering Bird a chance to play in the halves.

Bird has made it no secret he wants the ball in his hands and with the Sharks looking to play him in either the centres or at lock, the ability to play five-eighth with the Knights will be tempting.

The Knights aren’t the only club keen on Bird though, with the Parramatta Eels also reported to be in the race for his signature.

The Eels are in the market for a marquee half to partner Corey Norman and Jack Bird certainly fits the bill.

  1. Bird is worth 1mill a year over 3 years and his position will be full back. He reads the play well from further back and can break into the line. There’s nothing at Newcastle for him. The Eels will pick him up with the likes of Jennings at the end of his career.

  2. he said to Flanno he wants to stay at the club for a long time and be a future leader. If he stays at Cronulla he will probably play lock when Gallen retires…… But thats a lot of money for a young nrl player and could be tempted to go to the kinghts

  3. If he only wants to play fullback he knows that he is no chance at the Knights. Kalyn Ponga has that position tied down. However, he will definitely get his hands on the ball if he plays five eighth. The Knights have shown that they are willing to offer good money to the right player as they put together a competitive team. He should be very tempted.
