Danny Levi's recent form will have the Newcastle Knights questioning their decision to allow him to negotiate with rival clubs.

Off-contract at the end of next season, the Newcastle Herald reported last week that the Knights have allowed Levi's manager to talk to other teams.

In Newcastle's 28-14 win over the Eels last week, Levi put in one the best performances of his young career, recording a team-high 41 tackles and 104 attacking metres.

And amid the contract discussions, the 23-year old said his chief focus is his own form and helping the team win.

"I really want us to get out of this rut, so I put all my energy and attention into just having a good game, and the team," Levi told the Newcastle Herald.

"If I keep doing that, everything is going to work out."

Levi added that he would find it hard to leave Newcastle.

"Obviously I'd love to stay here," he said.

"I love Newcastle. I call it my home away from home.

"But I can't control the future. All i can control is the present and what I do here and now. So my focus is the team and getting wins for the team."

Knights coach Nathan Brown was hoping that Levi will be a part of the club's future plans.

"In an ideal world ... Mitch Barnett and Lachy Fitzgibbon, Danny Levi, Daniel Saifiti, Sione [Mata'utia] - those handful of blokes - I'd like to hope that they could be a part of this club for a long time and be good, consistent players in a side that keeps getting better each year," Brown said.

  1. His recent form is going to have them questioning their decision?
If he can produce what he did on the weekend week in, week out for the rest of the year, I would say you are spot on, but prior to this weekend he has been a liability in attack and defense.
He seems to be too lethargic without anyone really giving him a challenge for the spot. Once Griffin is fit and back in the picture later in the year, he will either have to produce the sort of performance we saw this week, every week in order to keep his spot.
If not, he will be benched as he was last year. And if he decides to kick stones instead of trying his hardest to get the starting spot back (as he did last year), he will more than likely need to find a new club.
I love watching Levi at his best, he just needs to shorten the gaping chasm that is the difference between his best and worst performances.

  2. This is one of the few sites that has given Danny Levi any credit for last week’s win so good on you for that Ben Cotton.
This guy played his heart out , but in the spirit of the true team player, passed the ball on at the right moments to make sure all the hard work achieved the best results. And yet, as far as some journos and fans would have you believe, it was Mitchell Pearce who did it all. Unfortunately, just like Nathan Ross, the Knights have been wanting to get rid of Levi for a while. It won’t make any difference how hard he plays, he’ll be gone when his contact is up. Shame really, there’s certainly potential there, he just needs a team and a coach who will appreciate him. He definitely showed his worth playing for new Zealand.

  3. Danny Levi on his day is a top Hooker. He can tackle his heart out and making great quick runs in behind a slow defense line but other days he has brain fades were he’s soft tackling or tries a little to much on attack and it lets his team down. No matter what tho he plays with his heart 100% and that something you can coach. He’s only 23 and at the Knights he’s never been fully supported or had help leading what has in the past been a very poor forward pack. Hope his Manager gets him a hug at a team what will support him and doesn’t have a weak forward pack. He could be handy for the Cowboys or Panthers, Granville doesn’t really play the full 80 and he’s getting old. Plus there are a few kiwis there (Kahu/TMM etc) and dominate forwards. At the Panthers they have a few hooking prospects but Levi would be the best win now option and with the likes on Maloney/Cleary and Tamou/RCG he would have experience and quality around him.
