Queensland legend Wendell Sailor has warned Kevin Walters against taking the vacant Titans coaching position, stating it could be the last NRL job he gets offered.
Walters is expected to be unveiled as Gold Coast's coach next week following the sacking of Garth Brennan a fortnight ago.
However, Sailor believes it could tarnish his reputation and coaching future.
“I don’t want him to go for the job and I don’t want him to get the job anyway,” Sailor said on Saturday’s Triple M NRL show.
“If I was Kevvie, I wouldn’t do it. He just doesn’t need to. I’ve said this time and time again, I just don’t want him to go for the job.
“It’d be great for the Titans to have him and Mal [Meninga] there together, two Queensland legends, but he’s got a job to do for Queensland.”
Sailor added that Walters should be patient and wait for for a better opportunity to come along.
“I see a lot of pain. If he has real crap season, which I think he’s a big chance of with the roster that he’s got there at the moment, there’s not going to be too many more people who will want to go there next season, or if he signs on this year,” he said.
“If Kevvy takes this job and he fails in 12 to 18 months, he won’t get another NRL gig. Simple as that.”
Walters is a great guy but a crap coach, Titans would be mad to appoint him as head coach, Holbrook sounds like he has his finger on the pulse in this coaching caper.
