Contracts have never meant less when it comes to rugby league.
Despite recently re-signing with the Gold Coast Titans, fullback turn five-eighth turn centre AJ Brimson is being linked with a move away from the club.
Last year Brimson extended his deal with the club, meaning he is under contract until the end of the 2030 season.
Despite this, talks are that the Titans are open to letting their prize asset move on, with a view to investing his massive contract elsewhere.
I am a huge AJ Brimson fan. I believe he's the best fullback at the Titans, but unfortunately his versatility may be his undoing.
If I'm the Titans, I'm allowing Brimson to move on. Jayden Campbell has been re-signed as the long term marquee half, while Keano Kini has been favoured in the fullback role.
If, and potentially when, Brimson does become available, there will be no shortage of clubs lining up for his services. For different reasons also.
Here are five potential landing spots for AJ Brimson.
4. PNG Chiefs
With Conor Watson set to become a PNG Chief, via a one-year deal at the Dragons, the precedent is about to be set.
You have to believe another AJ, Alex Johnston, has been signed to play fullback for the Chiefs, but Brimson halfback next to Jarome Luai certainly excites.
This isn't the ideal situation, for mine, as I rate Brimson a much better fullback than I do a half. That said, with an actual run at half, perhaps he can return to his former form there.
Brimson has been shifted from halfback to five-eight to centre, to fullback and round again. He never really gets a chance to re-find his game.
The Chiefs could absorb Brimson's entire contract, with ease. I have a feeling the Titans would move on if they could escape from the complete contract.
Brimson seems settled on the Gold Coast so asking him to move however many hours north may not be ideal, but for a full time spine spot, might be worth it.
