Joseph Manu could make an early return to the NRL in 2027 before linking up with the PNG Chiefs in 2028, with his French rugby commitments potentially leaving the door open for a late-season cameo.
Manu's current duties in French rugby are set to finish in time for him to sign with an NRL club before the June 30 deadline, opening the possibility of a remarkable mid-season return.
It would be a bold move for any club to bring in a player of Manu's calibre midway through the season, particularly given the disruption it could cause to their existing backline combinations. However, the NRL has proven time and time again that almost anything can happen when clubs are desperate for reinforcements.
It remains too early to know which clubs would be interested in Manu's services, with an injury replacement the most likely pathway should he return. But with his availability emerging, here are FIVE clubs who could make a play for Manu.
5. Parramatta Eels
The Parramatta Eels could be an intriguing option for Manu given the uncertainty surrounding their outside backs heading into 2027.
Should Josh Addo-Carr not return next season due to alleged off-field circumstances, Brian Kelly could shift to the wing to fill the void, potentially opening up a centre position for Manu should the Eels look for a mid-season injection of experience.
Manu is also capable of playing fullback, and with Apa Twidle and Sean Russell off to Perth Bears next season, depth in their number one role would be needed if Isaiah Iongi goes down.
Parramatta have also shown they are not opposed to short-term arrangements, with Jonah Pezet joining the club only for the 2026 season and now Jarome Luai arriving on a one-year deal in 2027 ahead of his move to PNG the following year.

Coach Jason Ryles has also demonstrated a willingness to explore short-term solutions if they can help the Eels make an immediate impact and achieve a top eight finish.
And should Parramatta's injury problems continue into 2027, the opportunity to add a player of Manu's quality midway through the season could be difficult to overlook.
