The St George Illawarra Dragons are shopping fullback Matt Dufty as they look free up the necessary cap space to sign off-contract Eels star Jarryd Hayne, according to a report by Fairfax Media.

Dufty is contracted at the Dragons until the end of the 2019 NRL season, but the Red V have made him available to rival clubs.

The 22-year old is reportedly keen to stay at St George Illawarra but the club is not prepared to pay the young gun is current asking price.

Dufty played all 26 games for the Dragons last season, scoring 13 tries.

Hayne is in an uncertain spot for 2019, reportedly commanding $700,000 per season, while Parramatta currently have just $200,000 in the kitty.

The Eels are aggressively looking to release a player so that they can retain Hayne, with Michael Jennings, Corey Norman and Mitchell Moses the players reportedly being shopped around.

  1. Great move for Parra – He should have never been signed after he left for the NFL the bloke is toxic. It would be good to see him play another year on 500k and show he deserves 700k.

  2. Hayne I’m not too sure about but if it was to be then the Dragons would be silly to pay $700k.
Parra can’t afford him and I can’t see any other clubs knocking on his door so surely Hayne would have to except what ever if he wants to remain in the NRL.
Sad about Dufty being shopped around but he’s too small to be a top notch fullback and there was a lot of times last season he took the pass off the halves and then died with the ball instead of passing it on to create other opportunities.
    Cheers

    • Hi mate…
I think Hayne is a massive gamble regardless of the pay packet.
They talk about going missing then this guy is the king of MIA for both matches and parts of the season.
You are spot about Dufty btw. We can fix the ball play but he will always need protection.

      • Hey Pedro how’s things mate?
        Are you still OS?
I might be wrong but if we sign Hayne I reckon he’ll be a contender for the Dally M.
I know he goes MIA but there comes a time when footballers wake up and I think this year after all the criticism he’s copped could be another break out year for him.
        Take care Pedro

  3. Matt Dufty is such a good young player he could find plenty of clubs wanting to sign him such as The Bulldogs, Canberra, Sharkies and funnily Newcastle. Newcastle would be a great fit with Ponga likely to go to 6, fullback is likely a weak ish spot with utility Connor Watson having a go there but Matt Dufty would be a better fit being 22 years old and more of a natural Fullback. Ironically Newcastle were looking at Micheal Jennnings so the Eels could resign Hayne but by snagging Dufty, the Dragons can buy Hayne.

    1. Dufty
    2. Ross/SKD
    3. Moga
    4. Ramien
    5. Lee
    6. Ponga
    7. Pearce

That’s a top 8 backline that’s very young and filled with potential.

    • So what happens to Watson? And Lino? Surely there are gaurantees there that those two will get positions in the team somewhere. Watson was very good in his time at fullback he played at the Roosters, but time will tell if he wants to be a long-term first grade fullback. The plan would make sense if they hadn’t signed Lino, who to me only seems like a spanner in the works.

      • Watson could resume in the 14 jersey a role I like him in. By having him on the bench you can play him hooker halves or fullback and he brings a lot of impact and speed. Lino is a weird one for me. If Nathan Browns plan all along was Watson 1 Ponga 6 Pearce 7 Lino was only ever going to be a back up anyway. He isn’t much of a bench player cause he doesn’t cover the backs or hooker really. Matt Dufty would be a awesome signing that would fit the Knights timeline and fit the young core they are building. With him being 22 and not being in extreme demand they could throw him a deal worth say 400k for 4 years, enough to entice him and have him play a couple years possibly in his prime on a cheap deal

  4. I laugh at a lot of parra supporters especially on a certain parramatta chat site saying the eels are stupid and Brad Arthur has no idea. To hayne is toxic and they will be way more better off without him…

    • Whilst I agree that Dufty should be given another year to prove himself, his attitude has been poor and he’s asking crazy amount of money given he’s a rookie. The idea is Hayne is a stop gap while Jai Field is groomed for the role. However, they could use Hayne to replace McDonald on the wing and shift him and Dufty around in attack and defense.
