The Dolphins have pulled off their second enormous signing coup of the day, locking up Selwyn Cobbo on a long-term deal through to the end of the 2031 season.
Cobbo had already re-signed earlier this season out to the end of next year, but that would have once again made him a free agent, able to negotiate with rival clubs, from November 1.
Instead, he has confirmed he will remain with the Dolphins for an additional four years, signing a deal that is believed to be worth around $800,000 per year.
His form has been outstanding this year, becoming a walk-up starter for Queensland and likely the Kangaroos at the World Cup to be played in October and November, while he has been a key part of the Dolphins' push to the finals where they now have a week off before clashing with either the Sydney Roosters or Cronulla Sharks in a preliminary final.
“Selwyn has made an immediate impact since joining the Dolphins and what he has been able to produce in his first season at the club has been remarkable,” Dolphins CEO Terry Reader said of the re-signing.
“It is clear the environment has really suited him and he is enjoying his football – and Selwyn'sperformances are underlining that.
“At just 24 years of age we know there is still plenty of great football ahead of him, and we're excited that will be in a Dolphins jersey.
“He has quickly become an important part of our team and to have a player of Selwyn's calibre committed to the club through until the end of 2031 is a great result.”
Cobbo's re-signing is the second of the day after the club earlier confirmed Kulikefu Finefeuiaki has also committed through to the end of 2029.
The move starts to shrink the long list of off-contract players at Redcliffe, although the double re-signing will start to shape their salary cap which still needs to accomodate all of Jack Bostock, Herbie Farnworth, and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow among others who all come off-contract and will be chasing upgrades at the end of 2028.
It has been widely theorised that at least one of the Dolphins' marquee players will have to go, although it's understood the group are keen to stay together given their on-field success.
Farnworth and Bostock have both been heavily linked to an open market test with rival clubs ready to circle.
Bostock has been linked to his junior club the St George Illawarra Dragons, while Farnworth has been suggested as a possible play for the Sydney Roosters.
