Cronulla's salary cap fine is set to cost the club exciting hooker James Segeyaro, according to a report by the Daily Telegraph.

The NRL will reject the former Dally M hooker of the year’s contract in a major blow for the club just a week out from the season proper.

The Sharks has been trying to shed $353,000 from their salary cap per the league's punishment, and after after a deal that would've sent Ava Seumanafagi to the Wests Tigers fell through, Segeyaro now looms as the player who will have to make way.

The loss of Segeyaro not only means Cronulla are left with $160,000 in unspent cap space, but also just two two quality hookers on their list - Jayden and Blayke Brailey.

After initially drawing interest from Newcastle and Parramatta, Segeyaro revealed last month of his desire to remain in Cronulla.

“Even though the Knights and Eels recruited well, I felt Cronulla with what I know about the club, that premiership pursuit would give my best chance here,’’ Segeyaro told The Telegraph.

“If it was for free, I’d still want to be right where I am today.

“When it comes down to it, to wake up every day, it’s a blessing and privilege to even pull on the jersey and be part of this squad.’’

Sharks CEO Barry Russell was confident that the club would become salary cap compliant by round one.

“We’re working non-stop over this weekend with our salary cap auditor Jamie L’Oste Brown and the NRL’s salary cap auditor to reach an outcome that shows we’ll be cap compliant for round one,’’ Russell said.

“I’m extremely confident that will happen.’’

Segeyaro could yet sign with Cronulla's feeder side Newtown Jets in hopes of the club shedding another play soon to allow him return to the top-30 roster.

Its a tactic that is last player on first player off. When the NRL announce the punishment handed out and they have to free up 400k then Hooker James Segeyaro gets axed and Johnston stays.😵😆😂🤣😂🤣😁

He is the only 1 on here that gets personal from behind the keyboard yet he is the only 1 that has had his ID revealed due to his stupidity. 😄

  4. Last season when Segeyaro was shooting his mouth off about this & that, I said the Brailey brothers would be the two top hookers at Cronulla by the end of the year.
It’s taken a little longer. Yet again Sege looks like having no club for the new season. How’s life going at Cronulla now James?
Pack up, the Queensland Cup is calling again.

  5. So they were over the cap and still allowed to sign soggysao and now they can move him to their feeder club to free up cap space and bring him back later.
The NRL are bending over backwards to help the cap cheating drug cheats.
May as well give them the premiership for this year now so they can have two they didn’t earn or deserve.

  8. That’s not the way I understand it. My understanding is:
They were sufficiently under the salary cap (full salary cap) to accomodate Seggy’s contract.
The NRL didn’t approve/register the contract, because they were under investigation, and if found guilty, would have their cap reduced.
They were found guilty, and the cap reduced, so Seggy’s contract won’t fit under their revised cap, hence won’t be registered, unless the Sharks can make room by offloading another player/s.
I don’t think the NRL is “bending over backwards” for the Sharks, and if I was Todd I’d prefer the Sharks didn’t win a title for the next year or two at least, in order to move on from this.

The NRL is copping no end of grief, about countless issues, incl. the Sharks premiership etc, in part because there are so many actual issues, in part because of the way they are handling said issues, but mostly, in my opinion, because there are so many people in the media, incl. social media, that find fault in ever little thing they try and do, and take joy in turning them into “storms in a teacup” (no pun intended).
I’m not defending every aspect of the NRL, and I have some issues with some of the things they are doing too (namely the standing down of players pre convictions), but be fair.
