Kangaroos and Queensland captain Cameron Smith is set to announce his retirement from representative rugby league football, effective immediately.

Smith and Maroons coach Kevin Walters will front the media at 1pm in Melbourne, where the announcement is expected to be made, according to foxsports.com.au.

This means Smith won't play in the upcoming Origin series, leaving a hole in the No. 9 jersey for Queensland.

Smith has made a record 42 Origin appearances, and has a record 26 Origin wins.

He has captained the Maroons 21 times, which sees him third all time behind Wally Lewis (30) and Darren Lockyer (22).

He has also represented Australia 56 times for 49 wins, including 33 games as captain.
