Queensland coach Kevin Walters isn't interested in taking up the vacant role at the Gold Coast Titans, and is instead focusing all of his energy on the Maroons' 2020 State of Origin campaign.
Walters recently oversaw the Maroons' second consecutive series loss, and has been continually linked to the Titans, with speculation intensifying after Garth Brennan and the Gold Coast parted ways on Sunday.
However, Walters spoke to Fox Sports on Sunday about the vacant role at the Titans, and says it's not one that he's got his eye on.
โIโm still committed to Queensland for the next 18 months and thatโs what my heart is telling me,โ Walters told Fox Sports.
The Maroons coach, in fact, ruled himself out of any NRL job, suggesting his prime focus is on Origin.
โNot at the moment [would I take an NRL job], as I say, the Origin consumes me, itโs only just finished as we know, and I love the opportunity that Iโve been given to coach Queensland,โ he said.
โI know we can get back on top and I want to be apart of that and thatโll be my drive for the next 12 months.โ
Walters did comment on the Titans as a club, and believes this next appointment is a crucial one.
โThey need to take their time to get the right person in that position. Itโs a big role for someone, itโll be a good role for someone coming in,โ he said.
โTheyโve battled all along, since their inception way back in 1988 to get a footprint on the Gold Coast. itโs a tough one but itโll also be a good opportunity for a coach coming in. Who that is, Iโll leave that up to the Titans.โ
Give the Job to Jason Taylor
He almost collapsed one club so he will be good to get rid of the Titans
so the NRL can put a Redcliffe team in
smart move by Walters, that job would have killed his non reputation has a coach, let him coach QLD next year for another loss, seriously he is not a good coach, and i bet the QLD people wish they could get rid of him without a payout, good bloke . but, not a great coach.
Fitler is right. Time to fold up yet another unsuccessful Gold Coast team and give the license to someone else.
Advice to all coaches that are interested in the vacant Gold Coast job: Be careful in what you want, you may just get it!
