Tom Trbojevic is understood to be seeking a two-year extension at Manly, with the Sea Eagles facing an important decision over how they manage their superstar captain.
Trbojevic is off contract at the end of the 2027 season and can begin negotiating with rival clubs from November 1 this year, giving Manly a window to lock him down before other clubs can formally enter the race for his signature.
The Courier-Mail revealed the latest contract details, which would keep the 29-year-old at the club until the end of the 2029 season.
Trbojevic signed his last extension with the club in October 2025, committing to an extra year on top of his previous deal. Another two-year commitment before negotiating with rivals represents a significant show of faith in the club and its direction under coach Kieran Foran.
The timing of the proposed extension is also important given the changing salary-cap landscape across the NRL.
Trbojevic could command as much as $1 million per season on his next deal, in large part due to the salary-cap increases expected following the admission of the Perth Bears and Papua New Guinea into the competition.
He is currently understood to be earning around $1.3 million this season, before his salary drops to approximately $900,000 in 2027.
A two-year extension would take Trbojevic through to the end of 2029, when he would be 33 years old, meaning Manly would need to consider how his role could evolve across the latter stages of his career.
That does not necessarily mean a definite move away from fullback, with Trbojevic continuing to wear the number jersey whenever available this season. However, his lengthy injury history means the Sea Eagles will need to consider all options when planning their squad for the next three seasons.
The 2026 campaign is Trbojevic's 12th in the NRL, and he has now made 184 appearances for Manly, but injuries have once again restricted his availability.
He has managed just 14 appearances this season, with his troublesome hamstring again proving to be the main culprit.
At the same time, Manly are beginning to develop other options in the backline, with Clayton Faulalo among those showing promise in the fullback position.
With Reuben Garrick also set to depart at the end of next season, the Sea Eagles could eventually have the option of shifting Trbojevic into the centres if they believe it would help prolong his career and manage the physical demands placed on him.
That decision is still some way off as Manly enter the off-season, but a two-year extension would force Manly to look beyond simply keeping Trbojevic in the same role and consider how best to utilise one of the club's most important players through to 2029.
