The "sticking point" in the standoff between Parramatta Eels and forward Junior Paulo has led to the veteran's future being "up in the air".
Paulo's future beyond 2026 is yet to be cemented, with the 32-year-old once linked to expansion side Perth before a move west fell through.
It is understood a high asking price saw an end to discussions between both parties, with Paulo now a chance to remain in the blue and gold.
The monetary aspect remains a "sticking point" in Paulo's discussions with the Eels over a potential contract, leading to a "weird situation".
"It's a weird situation," Scott Pryde said on this week's episode of the NRL Contract Show.
"Junior Paulo was chasing, I think, $900,000 in Perth. They baulked at that asking price, and fair enough.
"He's then come back to Parramatta and will have to take a lot less than $900,000 to stay at Parra. As we understand it, the money is still the sticking point.
"It's up in the air where Paulo plays next year."
The Eels have three spots left for their 2027 squad, with one of those still likely to be filled by Paulo.
Parramatta isn't expected to be too active ahead of their pre-season start, having already signed Jarome Luai and Jaydn Su'A for next year.
"Parramatta has three spots left for next year," Pryde added.
"One of those is likely to go to Junior Paulo, which then leaves two. Most teams are going to enter the pre-season with 28-29 players, so I wouldn't expect too much action, at least immediately, out of the Eels.
"They'll welcome Jarome Luai and Jaydn Su'A at the start of pre-season."
