Melbourne Storm skipper Cameron Smith will have a chance to become the first player in NRL history to play 400 games, with Smith all but signing on the dotted line for a one-year extension into 2019.

The proposed deal, which has been reported by The Saturday Telegraph at $1 million for the season, was confirmed to the publication by Storm CEO Dave Donaghy, who is confident Smith will go around again next season.

“Our discussions all the way through have been really positive and I’m confident we’ll see Cameron play on in 2019,” Donaghy said.

“Cameron’s still playing at the highest level, his standards haven’t dropped and when he ultimately finishes his career, he will be remembered as one of, if not the greatest rugby league player in history.

“He has the opportunity to do something nobody else in the game has ever done – play 400 games of NRL. And nobody may ever do it again. That would be a remarkable achievement given how tough our game is, but even more remarkable is that you won’t hear him talk it up himself, he’s too humble for that and it’s all about the team for Cameron.

“If he’s able to achieve it, in Melbourne Storm colours, that’s something our organisation would be immensely proud of. He’s given an enormous amount of his life to our football club, it’s been a wonderful partnership for a long, long time.”
