Knights star Kalyn Ponga has flown back to New Zealand following the tragic passing of his cousin, as reported by the New Zealand Herald.

It is understood that Ponga and his cousin, who was recently in Newcastle to celebrate the the rising fullback's 21st birthday, were a similar age and very close.

Knights coach Nathan Brown opened up on how much of a difficult time it was for the club and Ponga's family.

"We are all devastated for Kalyn and his family," Brown told the New Zealand Herald.

"It's obviously a time when family comes first and there are a lot more important things than a game of footy."

Brown added that here was no pressure on Ponga to play in this Saturday's clash against the Sea Eagles.

"But I spoke to Andre this morning and he said Kalyn is desperate to play. At this stage, he'll be flying home on Friday morning and we have put our captain's run back until the afternoon so he can be there to prepare."

At this stage, Ponga will start at fullback for Newcastle.
