The year was 1998, and after years of bitter rivalry between the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the breakaway Super League, the two factions decided to bury the hatchet and merge into a single, unified competition: The National Rugby League (NRL) - a competition that has captured the hearts and souls of countless fans across the nation. Things got off to a strong start, and with 20 teams initially on board, the inaugural season promised to be a spectacle like no other!

Titans of the Game

Fast forward to today, and the NRL has solidified its position as the pinnacle of rugby league football in Australia. Over the years, a host of legendary clubs has emerged, etching their names into history with their relentless pursuit of glory. 

Take the Sydney Roosters, for example, a club that can trace its roots all the way back to 1908, and with a staggering 15 Premiership Titles and 5 World Championships under their belt, there's no denying the Roosters are the undisputed Kings of the NRL realm. 

Their arch-rivals, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, are no slouches either, boasting an incredible 21 titles - a testament to their unwavering determination and never-say-die attitude.

These aren't the only two teams that stand out in the NRL either, and The Parramatta Eels, founded in 1947, are a constant force to be reckoned with, constantly challenging the established order and keeping their opponents on their toes!

Individual Brilliance

Now, let's delve into the world of individual brilliance, where records have been shattered and legends forged. Take Hazem El Masri, for starters, who between 1996 and 2009 amassed a huge 2,418 career points, giving him the status of bearing a name that strikes fear into the hearts of defenders!

But El Masri isn't the the only player to etch his name into the history books. Andrew Johns, the legendary half-back, holds the record for the most points scored in a single season with a super-impressive 279 points in 2001.

Let's not forget David Peachey and Nathan Blacklock either, who jointly hold the record for the most tries scored in a single NRL season, both achieving 23 tries in 1999. There's also James Moloney, who holds the record for the fastest try scored in NRL history, crossing the try line just 7 seconds into a match while playing for the New Zealand Warriors against the Brisbane Broncos in 2008. 

We also can't forget to mention Cameron Smith, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and holds the record for the most NRL appearances. Smith's illustrious career spanned over two decades, during which he played 430 games for the Melbourne Storm, during which he showcased his unparalleled skill as a hooker. 

And, of course, there's Brett Stewart. Affectionately known as “Snake”, Stewart holds the record for the most tries scored by a fullback in NRL history. Having spent most of his NRL career with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, he managed to bag a total of 163 tries from the fullback position.

Team Triumphs

There's no denying that the NRL has some incredible players within its teams, but team exploits themselves have also left an indelible mark on NRL history. 

For starters, the Melbourne Storm, founded in 1998, hold the record for the longest winning streak in NRL history, achieving an incredible run of 15 wins in the 2012 season, solidifying their reputation as one of the league's powerhouse teams.

There's also the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, who set a record for the fewest points conceded in a single NRL campaign in the 2004 season, allowing just 268 points over the course of 24 games. 

On the other end of the spectrum, the Newcastle Knights have demonstrated their attacking flair with a record-breaking performance in the 2001 NRL Grand Final. Facing off against the Paramatta Eels, the Knights secured a memorable victory with a scoreline of 30-24, marking the largest winning margin in a Grand Final in NRL history to date.
