South Sydney premiership coach Michael Maguire and former Gold Coast Titans coach John Cartwright are equal favourites for the vacant Manly coaching position.

Maguire and Cartwright are the only two genuine contenders for the position, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Cartwright has been favoured for the job in recent weeks but Maguire has some influential support within the club.

Both candidates are in the running to replace Trent Barrett who resigned and is in a battle with the club over a payout.

Barrett and the Sea Eagles are headed to the courts unless the two parties can resolve their issues.

If there is no outcome within the next six weeks, there is every chance Barrett will have to return to the club for the start of the off-season training in early November.
