Ryan Matterson is set to be given the green light by Wests to negotiate his options with rival clubs, as his future with the Tigers remains in the balance, as reported by NRL.com.

The 24-year-old has further distanced himself from the club given his erratic behaviour over the past few weeks, leaving the club in an enraged position.

Matterson's management requested that the Tiger's forward would be free to negotiate his future with rival clubs, and Wests are set to grant him permission to do so within the next week.

A close relationship with incoming Titans coach Justin Holbrook may be the difference in Matterson moving to the Gold Coast if he is to see the exit door at Wests. Matterson spent time with Holbrook during his tenure at the Sydney Roosters.

Holbrook was able to lure Matterson from Parramatta to the Roosters initially, with Matterson even being given the captaincy of the clubs under 20's side that was under Holbrook's reign.

Both Holbrook and Matterson are both currently managed by the Orr brothers.

While all signs point to Matterson's exit from Wests, the club won't let their playmaker walk easily, with a favourable deal needed to get a deal done.

Even thought the Tigers don't want to see Matterson make the move north of the border easily, they have already begun forming a list for potential replacements for the 2020 season.

The Titans interest may need to be supported with allowing AJ Brimson to head in the other direction to satisfy both clubs, as Wests look to add to their fullback stocks.

Gold Coast are yet to comment on any deals offered to both Wests and Matterson, but are keen to free up salary space in hope of retaining several key players who are on the radar of fellow league rivals.

Talks of placing a transfer fee for the sale of Matterson has been opened to discussion however.

The Tigers have shown that they won't let deals for their best players get done easily, following the Ivan Cleary saga last year, proving they would only release a key name if they were to be satisfied with what they receive in return.

A second option for Matterson will be the Eels, whop have kept close tabs on the Tiger and his stained relationship with Wests.

Matterson's 2019 season began with an 18th man nomination in the Blues State of Origin series, but ended with his NRL club granting him leave from training to resolve personal issues.

Wests have also aided Matterson's current situation with support to sort out his ongoing issues, despite the club showing their frustrations with the situation.

Matterson is still contracted to Wests for another two seasons, with his current deal worth close to $350,00 per year.

  1. Would be great replacement for Gal, but id say we got no money left now, unless theres a few more players the Sharks are planning on moving along.

  2. No way Titans will let AJ Brimson go however a Sami Matterson swap could be on the cards hopefully not Sami is only 22 and has some great potential with his speed.

  3. I don’t know.
We need some experienced forwards to replace the 4 (at least) that we’re losing, and he’s a good player, BUT?
The way it looks, and maybe it’s the media and/or the way the Tigers want it to look, but there’s some serious doubt creeping in.
Maybe the Titans are keen because they expect to lose Arrow, and he’d be a great pick up for us.

  4. I hope Parramatta will look at players that aren’t with Penrith Eels. That would make a nice change.
Arrow will stay at the Titans. He wants to stay there. With all the money they’re spent before this season, they have next to nothing left to spend . Other than the re-signing of Arrow. That’s from their own player & club review.
So next to zero chance of getting Matterson, without releasing another player or two.
