Eels star Jarryd Hayne is set to meet with the St George Illawarra Dragons, according to a report by NRL.com.

Hayne was not present at the Eels’ first pre-season training session last week, and has reportedly been in contact with the Dragons due to contract discussions with Parramatta not progressing.

Dragons director of rugby league Ian Millward and coach Paul McGregor recently returned from holiday and will open discussions with Hayne.

It is understood that Hayne is unhappy with what the Eels are offering him, with the 30-year old exploring his options overseas.

It has given the Dragons an opportunity to pounce, who are looking to strengthen their backline following the departures of Jason Nightingale and Nene MacDonald and uncertainty surrounding Matt Dufty.

      • None what so ever, we finally get a Saints junior developing well at FB and he doesn’t seem to be in our plans for 2019 >> Go figure….
You would think we have learnt something from the days of Duges.

        • Mate if Alex Johnston is looking around dragons should make him a priority target. Forget Hayne, with Nene, Jason gone, plenty of cap for a good fullback, if they have to cut Lafai too.

I think Dufty’s attitude is poor in second half of season and that’s why Graham ripped him a new one after the bulldogs debacle. He certainly has potential but needs a good fb to mentor him, poor defence, poor passing, runs sideways far too much.

  1. If Saints get Hayne and play him in his rightful position at fullback then I can see Saint Illawarra becoming a serious top four team next season. The problem that Hayne has encountered is all his silly coaches since his NRL return refuse to play him in a position where he won his Dally M medals. As a FULLBACK.💪🎱👍

    • Is it water damage from his constant traveling to play out his “dreams”? Or maybe a damaged package from that enthralling night with a girl in San Francisco (for Hayne at least)?

      • And their inlays the biggest issue; who ever gets Hayne gets his mental liabilities with it. This guy was missing 2/3rds of last season with a stomach complaint>? BS!.
No thanks, Even if we loose Dufty i would fire up Jai Field with a chance.

        • Speaking of that, where would Dufty go if he does decide to move on from the Red V? Haven’t heard many teams trying to lure him away.

        • Some noise is coming from SL in the UK. I don’t see any teams left that need an upcoming FB in the NRL

  2. Lol all saints needed was 2 wingers that could return the ball with venom and finish tries properly. Surely if they sign Hayne and he fails Mary loses his job?

Widdop, Hunt, McInnes and Dufty are a brilliant spine and just need forwards and finishers around them.

    • Spot on SSTID. I’ve been saying for years we needed big bops wingers and we had one, and now we let him go. Pereira has guts and shows promise but we need a Radradra urgently and a centre.

      • Some here love to knock Parramatta. They went & got two big fast wingers though. Ferguson & Sivo. Sivo’s the next of the big flying Fijian wingers. Penrith should have kept him there.

  3. Nooo Saints, don’t do it! I just don’t think the Hayne Plane (or plain pain 😂)is worth the risk. Can be brilliant when he is on his game, but tends to cause too much disruption at a club. Good as an individual but not much of a team player in my opinion.

  4. If Hayne is playing fullback only he would be a good signing, however he needs a good coach and McGregor is not the answer. Hopefully 2019 will be McGregor’s last year as a coach. Any team that is beaten 40-4 by wooden spooners Parramatta is not going anywhere. In that game Hayne scored 3 tries and totally humiliated the Dragons. Not to mention the 38-0 thumping from the bulldogs 2 weeks later.

    • However the dragons that beat the Broncos would have smashed most teams by plenty that day. They fell in a huge hole and if full strength would have easily beat Souths and pushed the rorters. Let’s see what happens next year, last time we made the semis, in 2015, 2016 team was the worst performing in the clubs 95 year history. No way we can start as well next next year, but maybe we can build and finish strong like Storm and rorters. Dragons should have gone after Maguire, we need an outside coach who’s a hard man.

      • Agreed that we went well in the semi against Brissie but we were god awful before that. We need strengthening in the outside backs to replace McDonald and we’re weak in the centres. To me, Lafai wasn’t much chop this year and Aitken hasn’t thrown a pass in years. Hayne hasn’t done much since he came back from the US of A and I don’t think he’d be worth what he would undoubtedly think he’s worth. He’s too erratic and he’d want to come cheap for mine.
I’m not taken with K Sims either, so for me, another big bopper in the forwards would help too.

  5. There needs to be something in his deal as he might need to be present in USA. Based on that, his contract will need clauses around payments if he has to go to court for an extended period

  6. I’m surprised the dragons would want him.

I don’t think he is a “disruption” to a club but there is something to him not being in the mood at times.

People can say “he was injured” or carrying an injury or whatever but you can see it – you can see that jarrod just doesn’t muck in, at times. He has ALWAYS been like that.

  7. Hayne brings nothing to a team – time to move on. On Dufty – didn’t Mary bench him a couple of times late in the season – discipline issues?
