Damien Cook looks to be very close to being rewarded with a contract upgrade at South Sydney following his red-hot form, according to Fox Sports chief NRL reporter James Hooper.

Cook's storied career is well documented and he's appreciated fans far and wide for it. His never-say-die attitude had a happy ending as he was named as hooker for NSW' Origin team this year. However, that's not all the good news Cook is set to receive for the year.

The Rabbitohs star has been a dominant for his squad this season as is one of the reasons why they sit second on the ladder 16 rounds into the season.

On NRL 360, Hooper said the club would initiate contract talks with cook following the Origin III which will be played next Wednesday night.

“I think there’s going to be some good news at the South Sydney Rabbitohs,” Hooper told the show.

“Damien Cook, breakout year, playing 80 minutes in the No.9 jumper for the Bunnies.

“He’s signed until the end of next season, but I think the Bunnies have realised they’ve got a pretty special player here.

“They’re going to wait until the State of Origin period is finished and then they’ll sit down with Damien and his management with a view to making sure he stays in the red and green long-term.”
