Sydney Roosters veteran halfback Daly Cherry-Evans is set to continue his rugby league career, but not with the same club.
It had been widely believed Cherry-Evans would finish his career at Bondi Junction after moving from the Manly Sea Eagles at the end of 2025, with the only question being whether he would retire this year or next.
His contract at the Roosters does include an option for 2027, and while it was said at one stage he had already accepted it, both he and coach Trent Robinson have made conflicting comments in recent weeks suggesting a decision is yet to be made.
"Mate, I've honestly been taking it week by week,” Cherry-Evans told ABC Radio last week.
“There's a lot of people in the media trying to predict my future and when I figure it out, I'll let everyone know.
“And I'll let my friends and family know first of all!”
It has now emerged, per a News Corp report, that Cherry-Evans is in advanced talks with Hull FC around the possibility of finishing his career in the English Super League.
The halfback, who is now 37 years of age and has 372 NRL games under his belt likely needs just one more season in Australia to bridge the 400-game barrier, however, the 26-time State of Origin representative now appears unlikely to go around for the Roosters again.
The former Manly Sea Eagle has found exceptional form in recent weeks as the Roosters push towards finals action, currently sitting at the pointy end of the NRL ladder, but they have a logjam in the halves.
The club is currently in what is now believed to be broken down negotiations with halfback Sam Walker, who is set to go to the open market on November 1, while Hugo Savala and Toby Rodwell are also both signed into and beyond next year.
That leaves both of those players potentially sitting outside the halves if Cherry-Evans does wear a Roosters uniform in 2027, although Savala has found a home in the outside backs at centre this year.
That could yet cost the Roosters injury-prone outside back Billy Smith, although exactly what the Roosters look like there in the years to come remains to be seen as well, with James Tedesco and Daniel Tupou both approaching the end of their careers, and Mark Nawaqanitawase heading back to rugby union at the end of this year.
The club has already signed Reuben Garrick for 2027 from the Manly Sea Eagles, and it's believed Murray Taulagi will also join from the North Queensland Cowboys.
No timeline has been set for a decision from Cherry-Evans, with Hull desperate to secure his services for one final season in the sport.
