North Queensland winger Nene Macdonald is allegedly being investigated by the Cowboys and police after an incident on Magnetic Island in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to a Channel 7 report, a car loaned in Macdonald's name in Townsville was found on the road written off at 4am.

The report also said mechanics who towed the vehicle said there was significant damage to the left side of the car, as well as the tyres.

Police added they found Macdonald's driver's licence in the car, as well as open alcohol containers.

The Cowboys released the following statement on Thursday night.

The North Queensland Cowboys are aware of an alleged traffic incident involving a squad member overnight. The club has been in contact with the player in question as well as the NRL and will be making no further comment on this matter until internal investigations are completed.

Macdonald hasn't played for the Cowboys since April, after suffering a broken ankle.
