The cashed up Panthers are set to go after a host of rival NRL stars this off-season with $600,000 in their salary cap, the most of any Sydney club, according to The Daily Telegraph.
The club will likely pursue a five-eighth, centre or front-rower and are monitoring players who are off-contract, disgruntled or homesick.
Ryan Matterson is one name that is likely to be on the move and could be Penrith-bound.
It comes after Penrith have moved on seven stars over the past year in Reagan Campbell-Gillard, James Maloney, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Wayde Egan, Corey Harawira-Naera, Waqa Blake and Christian Crichton.
An NRL recruitment manager told The Daily Telegraph: “$600,000 is a lot to have” at this time of year."
A source close to the Panthers added: “There will be clubs that have salary cap issues so Penrith will wait and see what lands. Penrith has a few dollars in the bank.
“The club will wait until November 1 and see what comes on the market.
“It is now just a matter of wait and see. The club isn’t in a rush but if they find someone that suits, then okay. The club certainly has plenty of flexibility in their salary cap so let’s see what happens in November.”
The Panthers have denied they are interested in Sydney's Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and have cooled on Melbourne's Christian Welch after his knee injury.
“But there is only so long you can hold onto the money,” one NRL coach said.
With all the players released during last season it should be way more than 600k in the kitty. Maloney was worth more than that alone.
With that sort of money they could buy one good players and release a 400k player to make up 1 million then they could go for a great player.
The other senario is they could do a Souths and purchase 4 or 5 dud players.
600k these days is not enough to be labelled as all “cashed up”. Nobody wants to Go there anyway. Penrith have created a toxic environment for their players. They are all looking over the shoulder to see who is next to be tapped on the shoulder.
They may spend it on getting Moylan back.

Let Dean Whare walk, or even consider swapping him for someone like Ben Matalino or Russell Packer, atleast a forward can play off the bench whereas is Whare isn’t good enough your paying him for reserve grade.
Then lastly at five-eight, you already have Jerome Luai and other youngsters. Would throw an offer at Jackson Hastings but wouldnt pay overs for a fringe player or something.
Dylan no he should stay. Dean should leave, and it is a pass on Matalino and Packer.

Nathan played admirably this season. He will play better next year with Maloney gone.
I’d hope to see them sign a couple of impact forwards that can run on from the bench or start on the field like Lloyd Perrett, Patrick Mago, Patrick Kaufusi, as well as sign another centre like Dylan Walker. Imagine Walker and Lui swapping positions during the sets of 6. How dangerous would that attack be?

That comment in isolation is wrong and doesn’t make any sense. When you put some context around it it may become useful/meaningful, but as it is it’s just wrong.
For example, at least 12 players have left the Panthers and only 1 player has been added, according to the ZT player transfer list, so $600k couldn’t even fill the squad with min. wage rookies. I know that’s not the case, but I don’t know what assumptions have been made that leads to the “$600k” cap. capacity either.
I’m sure the Panthers have some serious coin for recruitment, and I’m sure they’ll be very active in the market, so I get absolutely nothing from the article. Zero.

chookstir, DWZ clearly had a dummy spit. He was asked to play reserve grade due to poor form, he refused to play, then requested a release. Bit sus. RCG, he was totally out of form. Blake, there was rumours he was causing problems with in the playing group. Maloney inhibited Cleary’s game. The rest were mainly reserve grade players.
I think you are not reading what Mark is explaining Panthers18. Penrith have created a toxic environment for the remaining players who have not been shopped around and 600k is not cashed up like this story claims. How is the truth explained by Mark negative?

They don’t require a fullback, with 3 on the books now. Edwards, Aekins & Staines. Charlie Staines was player of the year in Jersey Flegg & played Canterbury Cup. .
They don’t require a half either, with a list of talented halves coming through including Luai, Burton.
Another centre may be useful. Or another hard running prop. Even a couple of young props like Timm.

Also, Panthers are not as cashed out as you think. RCG was on 800K for a 4-year deal. Parra took up that deal but for 600k a season. Meaning that Penrith have to pay 200k a season for 4 years for a player that doesn’t even play for them!!

Panthers18, why would RCG move to another club for less money. Ivan wanted to clear up his salary space, by getting rid of RCG. We offered 600k they had to fill in the gap for the contract. Do the math.

P18 and P69, whilst I’d be the first to admit I don’t know the actual amount of subsidy, if any, I think that number would be about right.
The fact that RCG and Blake were re-signed to the Panthers when they were in form, and shopped around whilst being out of form, the fact both were signed for the same periods they had remaining on their Panthers deals etc, all point to a level of player subsidy from Penrith. The $200k p.a for RCG, at least in year 1 (possibly scaling down over the full term) looks right, and I’d expect around $100-150k p.a on Blake’s too, and possibly a bit on DWZ’s (although he didn’t have as long to run on his contract).
But even if it (the total level of subsidy) was as high as $500k p.a for those 3 players, and I doubt it would be that high, those players alone would still free up well over a $mil. and could go as high as $1.3/1.4mil p.a. add to that the other players leaving, like Maloney etc, and assuming the Panthers will be replacing some of those players with rookies coming through, and it all points to a very healthy cap. position for at least a couple of quality players.
There was rumours that Blake caused disharmony within the player ranks. Also Campbell-Gillard, was considering retirement? Exactly, eelsalmighty.
Zero tackle had an article a couple months ago stating Egan was on 500k a year so with him gone you’d think panthers have a bit more the 600k the daily Telegraph had dwz on 800k rcg on 850k and Blake on 750k Maloney was on 900k that’s 3.8 million gone with the only player being paid for leaving being rcg the panthers are paying 200k for next season that’s all plus manly paid 150k of api contract. The panthers will sign Welch just before round 12 next year they feel it’s better for Welch to finish he’s knee rehab at Melbourne then they’ll sign him to a two and half year contract panthers also trying to get gagai
