The Panthers are close to lifting the strain on their salary cap, as they edge closer to gaining dispensation for the injury which saw Tim Browne's career come to an early end.

Browne was playing in an Intrust Super Premiership match earlier this season before suffering a serious bowel injury that would force him into an early retirement.

The 30-year-old was in intensive care for two days after the incident, with doctors saying the injury was similar to that of car crash victims.

Because of the injury and it's severity, the NRL would likely accept a request from the Panthers to have Browne's player salary for 2019 lifted from their books, which would free up around $300,000 should the move go ahead, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Penrith would still have to pay Browne's full wage for the 2018 season.

If the Panthers were to be free to use the extra $300,000, they could use it to help secure the future of some of their stars.

The likes of Nathan Cleary, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and James Fisher-Harris are all off contract at the end of the 2019 season, while the Panthers could also use the salary cap space to bring in new talent.
