The Brisbane Broncos have sacked Wayne Bennett, according to a report by The Australian’s Brent Read.

Bennett will depart the club after 20 years and six premierships, one of the longest and most successful coaching eras in rugby league history.

It comes after the 68-year old sensationally signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs from 2020 this off-season, while Souths coach Anthony Seibold took the top job at Red Hill, effectively seeing the pair switch places.

It seemed logical that the swap would happen ahead of next season, but the process was drawn out as Bennett was in the UK coaching England in their Test series against New Zealand.

Bennett held a press conference on Friday, declaring that he would remain at the Broncos for the 2019 campaign, but the club have reportedly decided to terminate his contract.

It paves the way for Seibold to take over Brisbane’s top job immediately and Bennett to join South Sydney.

But will either side survive the fallout and leftover toxicity of this catastrophe?

      • Ding dong the witch is dead
        Broncos fans rejoice
Souths fans get ready for some serious heartache
Mark my words Bennett is poison and only cares about 2 things
        Himself and his bank account.

        • Yet many of the players he has coached love him and some credit him for turning their lives around. it is a mystery.

        • Papa Smurf: Look at my watch tommy. ⌚ Watch it go back and forth… back and forth… back and forth… nothing else exists but the sound of my voice and the knowledge that everything you have is because of me.

Now, when I click my fingers you will wake up and remember nothing. But every time you hear my name or the word “coach” you will feel warm and fuzzy inside and think that you cannot exist apart from me. Now 1, 2, 3 wake up tommy!

        • Maybe you should wake up and not be so brainwashed. No coach is perfect and I am glad to see him leave Brisbane as his time was up. However to deny his achievements and the undisputed fact that many, many players feel a strong bond towards him is just ignorant.

The fact is you do not remain in the game as long Bennett has without doing something right, or making enemies. The problem is, IMO, purely age related. The game has passed him by. His commitment to his players should never really be questioned.

You are just a little miffed that Bennett is now Souths. I am just waiting until Souths go on a good winning run, and they are good enough to do so, and all the Bunny Rabbit supporters will wax lyrical about how “Papa Smurf”is the bestest coach of the universe and how Rusty’s huge intellect and star power made all this possible.

Or you lose and lose lots. Its win-win for me.

        • Brainwashed, me? I didn’t even mention his name or say “coach” tommy and you still went off like Brisbane’s version of “The Manchurian Candidate”. Now THAT’s conditioning!

Oh, and speaking of “brainwashing” tommy, it’s Wayne Bennett NOT “Papa Smurf”.

          1, 2, 3 wake up tommy! 😂😂😂

        • Not all Rabbit supporters Tommy, i’m a supporter who believes Bennett will be good for our club, Reg doesn’t speak for all of us, he believes Bennett will be no good , fair enough, he is entitled to his opinion, but other Souths supporters on this site reckon he’ll be good , so if Souths do go on a great run, just give it to Reg, i know i will, and opposite , no doubt Reg will give it to me if he is right, will be intersting to see how this all pans out.

        • Believe me penso, I hope you and tommy are right about this not me. I don’t want to see our proud club sabotaged and destroyed just to prove a point. But it has been a shocking beginning you have to admit.

I can only imagine the Rabbitohs faces today at training if they had missed the news and rock up to Redfern oval to find Bennett standing there. The 3 Burgii might think for a second they are back training for England. My fear is that Bennett, after seeing them, may think he is training England as well. 😂😂😂

    • Hey! It wasn’t THAT long ago that the “Sea Eagles Circus” left town buddy. Well, aren’t you just ecstatic that Souths are now taking the spotlight off your club? Even the Broncos come out of this with less toxic waste to dispose of will the Bunnies are buried in the fallout.

      • Yes I’m very happy the other circus had moved on. Ours got a bit stale so we needed a new one. Now for the next big thing in the NRL bag of tricks. 🤡🎪

  1. Not a great start to the “Bennett’s Bunnies” era. A damning email from South’s CEO and an explosion by outgoing coach Seibold that paints a picture of South’s general manager of football Shane Richardson and CEO Blake Solly as being Bennett’s puppets in this fiasco. Let the dark ages begin as the Bennett plague sweeps across Redfern. The Cryptkeeper has arrived!!!

“The leaked email from Seibold to Blake Solly (Souths’ CEO) detailing Bennett’s alleged involvement in player/coaching staff recruitment and retention for 2019 is damning and designed to inflict as much damage on the Broncos coach as possible.”

“It does not paint the Souths hierarchy in a great light, either.”

“They’ve been made to look like Bennett’s puppets and now Seibold is also tugging their strings.”

    • Yes, unfortunately Reg with how this has played out I believe both clubs are going to have to do a lot of work to move forward successfully from this ‘circus’. I honestly believe that Wayne has been the cause of all of this, and yes maybe the clubs did not help but the master manipulator was at his best, feeding the media absolute crap and making fools of both clubs and fans. I used to have a lot of respect for Wayne Bennett but no more, he really does seem to have lost the plot and I feel sorry for Bunnies supporters and am now afraid that he may lead the club backwards.

    • thats crap Reg, how does that paint Souths hierarchy in a bad way, Souths genuine thought that Bennett would roll over, that article written by Adam Luciis is disgusting journalism, that bloke hasn’t got a brain in his head, saying Souths have in some way to blame for all of this.

I can’t blame Bennett at all for this, he has said from the start that he would honour his contract, so why listen to all the media hype? it would have been better if Souths didn’t suddenly rush in the sign Bennett, in hignsight perhaps they should have stood back and made a coaching decision later on.
I believe Bennett will be good for Souths just hope the players are ok with all that went on.

      • As Bennett’s puppets before he even gets to Redfern. I bet they didn’t even get conformation in writing from him either, just a verbal commitment over the phone. So in the end Souths look like fools who can’t even get a commitment in writing as most people in the real world do.

Sure Bennett was the architect and puppeteer but he exposed a lack of due diligence by Souths to have this commitment on the record. A recorded video conference between all parties would have sufficed.

      • I genuinely hope you are right penso for the sake of all Souths supporters. I have stated previously that I think the Bunnies playing roster is a better fit for Bennett as they have a more mature, well balanced team than Brisbane currently does. Just as long as this circus that has been going on for far too long does not have an adverse effect.

        • The “player exchange” round comes next mate and Seibold should be at the Broncos a lot longer than Bennett will be at the Rabbitohs. Not hard to figure out which of our two clubs stand to lose more in that exchange dreaglor.

        😂😀😀😆😆😁🤣🤣🤣😁😁😆😆😂😂🤣🤣😁😆😆😀😀😂😂😂🤣
Totally detestable that Souths dishonorable, now ex-coach Seibold, has been the primary dominant factor of this scandalous swap. If not for his ambitious desire to embezzle and plunder the coaching position, already in the possession of Bennett, then this botched situation debacle, would never have occurred.
South Sydney will suffer with Bennett’s backpedal and will transfer all the frustration, animosity and exasperation from the Brisbane Bronco officials to our Rabbits hierarchy. Bennett will on Monday start his advancement in the development of our demise. It is not required to be prudent or intelligence to understand, South Sydney will not be contesting a preliminary final within 2019-2021. Therefore fellow loyal Souths fans, like a bad business venture, having the foresight to right off our next three seasons, will undoubtedly avoid discouragement in the upcoming calamity.😂😂😂😂😂😂😆😆😆😁🤣🤣😂😀😀😆😁🤣💪👴👍

        • I forgot to address it to you Penso💪👴👍

          🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😁😆😀😀😆😁😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣

  2. Bennett didn’t want to be at Souths in 2019 – he clearly proved that on Friday. I think neither players want either coach!

      • Yep, and even though his “master plan” was to double dip on next year’s salary, and to get one back on the Bronco’s management, what price will the Bunnies pay?
Those players, like the Burgess brothers, who know him well probably won’t be too phased by this, but if you didn’t know him, and especially if you were close to Siebold, you’d be thinking twice about him already.

  3. im thinking Bennett used reverse psychology in all this. Where he in did fact want to go to souths by contacting those bunny players, After all he is the “Supercoach”

    • “super schemer” might be more appropriate because his record in 2018 compared to Seibold leaves a lot to be desired.

Actually, in the end, it was Seibold who dropped the grenade to break this deadlock. 💣💥

  4. Seems like the Broncos at pleased at Bennet’s departure.
Anthony Seibold will join the Brisbane Broncos as coach effective immediately.
Seibold had already agreed to join the club as coach from 2020 onwards, but he will now coach for 2019 as well after the departure of Wayne Bennett.
Seibold has been granted an immediate release by South Sydney, and will be at the Broncos tomorrow for the first day of preseason training with the full squad in attendance.
The Broncos would again like to thank members, sponsors, corporate partners, players and staff for their patience and understanding through this period of transition.

  5. Finally this debacle is all over, it just had to happen and why wait for the Bennett and seibold swap in 2020 it effects both Rabbitohs and broncos during 2019.

  6. My personal view is that Bennett didn’t want to be known as “jumping ship” again. At least if he is sacked it shows the Broncos wanted him gone and that it wasn’t him abandoning the team. So there isn’t as much pressure on him compared to ditching Broncos on his terms. But I’d say it has backfired and the pressure on both will be massive.

    • “My personal view is that Bennett didn’t want to be known as “jumping ship” again.”

No jayy12, he wanted to be remembered for scuttling the ship! Now it’s the Rabbitohs turn and if things don’t work out and Souths want to replace him before his contract expires they won’t be able to shift him with dynamite! 💣💥

      • Take a good look at the photo In this article Reg, becuase the next time you see him he’ll be wearing the cardinal and myrtle polo.
But on the bright side, you’ll get used it.

        • Make it a turtleneck sweater instead of a polo and just myrtle without the cardinal and he will look like a “myrtle turtle”. Bahahahahahahahaha 😂😂😂

“Oh, the pain! The pain!” – Dr Smith “Lost in Space”

        • Just for you Reg.
Bennett to the Rabbits, ‘Warning, warning, aliens approaching” – Robot ‘Lost in Space’😀😀😀

        • Is it just me dreaglor or is there a noticeable resemblance between Papa Smurf and Dr Smith in the 60’s TV series “Lost in Space”? 🛸👴🤖👽

        • Well there may not be a strong physical resemblance, but they certainly seem to share the same personality disorder!! 😂😂😂😂

      • So souths haven’t officially signed him for 2019 yet? Please make my year and not have him coach for 2019 haha.

  7. Heard Jason Demetriou is coming as well as an assistant, hope it’s true.. succession planning.. lol
Think we’re in for a roller coaster ride fellow rabbitohs..
    Hope I’m wrong….
    UP THE RABBITOHS

  8. Totally detestable that Souths dishonorable, now ex-coach Seibold, has been the primary dominant factor of this scandalous swap. 9. By rights Jack is signed with the Bronx until 2020, but what is a contract signature in the Nrl nowadays. So quite possibly yes..

    • Nothing official on the signing of Lodge, Pangi or Oates as I believe that the Broncs wanted the coaching drama sorted before making an official announcement. Just on Jack Bird, would like to see how he goes while fully fit, but still cannot understand why the Broncs signed him in the first place and for what position.

    • If that is the case you can keep your Bird in the hand and we will snatch TPJ from the Brisbane proverbial bush. Cheers! 👍🏻

      • TPJ for Cook, deal!!!!!😜😜😜😜😜
Don’t worry Reg, he wont be coming to the Broncos according to reports, although he may cook up a storm at another Sydney club…………………………

        • Trade Cook? Hell NO!! Cook, Inglis and Sam Burgess are locked in and off the table. Along with Souths juniors like Reynolds, AJ, Murray and Graham. I would prefer to hold Jennings but might throw him in if pushed. Corey Allen and Cody Walker along with the Burgii twins are all keepers as well.

The “Angry Eagle” is telling me he will be going to Newcastle in 2020. If true, “NOT happy Jan!” But then again he did say that Cronk was and 80% chance of coming to the Rabbitohs! 😂😂😂

        • “The “Angry Eagle” is telling me he will be going to Newcastle in 2020.”

Damien Cook that is NOT the “Angry Eagle”. 😂😂😂
