The Brisbane Broncos have sacked Wayne Bennett, according to a report by The Australian's Brent Read.

Bennett will depart the club after 20 years and six premierships, one of the longest and most successful coaching eras in rugby league history.

It comes after the 68-year old sensationally signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs from 2020 this off-season, while Souths coach Anthony Seibold took the top job at Red Hill, effectively seeing the pair switch places.

It seemed logical that the swap would happen ahead of next season, but the process was drawn out as Bennett was in the UK coaching England in their Test series against New Zealand.

Bennett held a press conference on Friday, declaring that he would remain at the Broncos for the 2019 campaign, but the club have reportedly decided to terminate his contract.

It paves the way for Seibold to take over Brisbane's top job immediately and Bennett to join South Sydney.
