The Board of NSW Rugby League has announced the appointment of Brad Fittler as the coach of the NSW Blues State of Origin team for seasons 2018 and 2019. The decision was made this morning at the monthly NSWRL Board meeting.

In announcing the appointment, the Chairman of the Board, Dr George Peponis OAM, said: “Given the importance of this appointment, the Board has taken the appropriate amount of time to fully consider the issue. A number of highly qualified candidates expressed an interest in the position. I have no doubt that any one of them could have done a great job if the Board had decided to appoint them. Ultimately, the Board was unanimous in the view that Brad Fittler should be appointed to the position.

“Brad’s qualifications for the role are impeccable and his standing within the game is pre-eminent. His recent efforts in the Rugby League World Cup with Lebanon serve as a reminder of his talents as a coach and they provide a window into the exciting future which he will bring the New South Wales State of Origin team.”

Chief Executive David Trodden said: “I couldn’t be happier for Freddy with this appointment. In the last few years, he has made a massive impression on everyone in the NSWRL with the work he has done with our KARI City Origin team and our Pathways teams. He has achieved outstanding success with these teams and in reality, he has spent those years preparing for the role which he has now been appointed to. NSWRL is in for a great ride and sustained success in the next few years beckons.”

  1. Well ok, he will have Gus and Joey with him so you can’t get much better than that i guess, i believe that NSW has the players to dominate for the next 5 years, and i believe those guy’s should be able to coach them to success.

  2. Nice best decision NSW have made in 8 years. Freddy will make Joey his Assistant coach. Gus Roming around. He will make sure he will have the squad that has pride to wear the NSW Jumper and if they don’t they won’t be there We got 3 of the Greatest minds in the game that have the most passion for NSW tho succeed 👌🏽👍🏽

    • I still believe that Toovey could light a fire under the Blues. Fittler and John though invaluable technically and tactically are too laid back and are likely to crack a joke when the boys to be focused IMO.

After his success with the Cedars though I can’t argue that Fittler deserves his chance and I still think he (with Johns assisting) will do a good job.

  3. Best choice, now he can get all the young inform talented players to form a Blues Dynasty. This will be the beginning of a great era for NSW.

  4. I’m not convinced. Qualifications are impeccable because he coached Lebanon? His NRL coaching career ended in tears. I hope he does well, but I really think the options were fairly limited for NSW. All the options – Hasler, Toovey, Maquire and Fittler – have all been sacked by their NRL clubs in the past for various reasons. Good luck to Freddy!

  5. So who was coaching the blues ?Fittler or The 3 Amigos.(Fittler,Johns,Gould) One thing for sure is nobody will be sneaking of to drink as there will be plenty of amber flowing. In saying that with the talent NSW has coming thru with the 3 amigos an age catching up on Qld,NSW are looking much better in years to come. What will be interesting is if NSW are doing well with the 3amigos over next few years is when the next TV deal comes up what if 9 looses the rights to the SOO
