The Wests Tigers could find themselves playing a home game a long way from home, with the club reported to be in discussions to take an NRL fixture to New Zealand's South Island.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, discussions have taken place about hosting a Tigers home game at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, with the venue emerging as the strongest proposal after the club was initially approached about playing in Christchurch, Hamilton and Wellington.

The potential move would help further promote rugby league in New Zealand's South Island, with the Southern Orcas continuing to push for inclusion as the NRL's 20th franchise ahead of the Ipswich Jets.

Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium has previously hosted NRL action, with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs taking on the New Zealand Warriors at the venue in 2017.

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall's strong connection to New Zealand is also understood to be a factor in the discussions, with the club weighing up its options ahead of a season that will see it without a permanent home ground.

An NRL trial match at Forsyth Barr Stadium is also being discussed, with the Sydney Morning Herald reporting that two Sydney powerhouse clubs are in talks about taking a pre-season fixture to the venue.

There had even been consideration of scheduling a game during the same week as the second State of Origin match in Auckland, potentially giving travelling rugby league fans another fixture to attend while across the Tasman.

The 2027 NRL draw is scheduled to be released on November 12, with the Tigers' home ground arrangements set to be a major talking point ahead of the new season.

The club will begin its campaign in Las Vegas against the Melbourne Storm before navigating a disrupted home schedule while renovations continue at Leichhardt Oval.

The $40 million facelift is expected to keep the Tigers away from their traditional home until 2028, leaving the club to split its home fixtures between alternative venues.

Campbelltown Stadium is expected to host six home games, although it is also awaiting its own renovations in 2028, while CommBank Stadium is tipped to stage approximately four fixtures.

The Tigers will also host a designated home game at Suncorp Stadium during Magic Round, in what is set to be the final year the Brisbane venue counts as a home fixture for the club.

With Leichhardt Oval unavailable and other Sydney venues also facing uncertainty, a trip to New Zealand could be on the cards.
