The Newcastle Knights have moved to secure one of their most promising young talents, with Kade McKay rewarded for his efforts with a contract upgrade.
Zero Tackle can reveal McKay has been handed a three-year development contract beginning in 2027 and running through to the end of 2029, with sources confirming the upgrade.
The Central Coast product had previously been on a junior contract but has now been rewarded for his development throughout the year, with the new deal providing a clearer pathway towards the Knights' NRL system.
Still in Year 11, McKay has already gained experience at Jersey Flegg level, an impressive milestone for a player who is continuing to progress through the club's junior pathways.
A product of Wyong Roos and Hunter Sports High, McKay has emerged as one to watch within the Newcastle system, with the school having produced several talented players who have gone on to represent the Knights.
One of the most notable current examples is Phoenix Crossland, who has established himself in the club's NRL side.
McKay's versatility is another major asset, with the youngster capable of playing in the second row or at centre, while also possessing the ability to take on goal-kicking duties.
His performances have already attracted attention, with McKay named player of the match in the Knights' Harold Matthews Grand Final earlier this year.
He has also continued to make his mark in representative football, having represented the NSW City under-16s last year, while a spectacular aerial try in the under-17s Koori Knockout Grand Final just weeks ago further highlighted his potential.
Continued development and further representative honours over the coming seasons could put McKay in contention for a Top 30 contract, should he maintain his current trajectory.
However, he is not the only member of the family making waves in Newcastle's pathways system.
McKay's twin brother, Jett, is also progressing through the Knights' junior ranks, with the five-eighth continuing to develop his game despite a knee injury interrupting his progress this year.
The setback has delayed his immediate pathway towards a deal similar to his brother's, but he is also expected to receive a contract upgrade as Newcastle looks to retain the talented youngster for the long term.
The family's footballing talent extends beyond the twins, with older brother Zahn already featuring in the Knights' Jersey Flegg side.
At 19, Zahn is approaching a crucial stage in his development, with his current contract also due to expire next year.
He is being developed into a versatile forward-backline option, with the Knights working on his ability to transition between centre and second row in a role similar to that of Luke Gardner.
That flexibility could prove valuable as he looks to take the next step through the club's system.
With Kade now securing a longer-term development deal, the Knights have taken the first step in keeping the McKay family progressing through their ranks.
All three brothers remain at different stages of their respective journeys, but their collective development will be one to watch as Newcastle continues to build for the future.
For now, Kade's upgrade represents a significant reward for his progress, with the talented teenager given a clearer opportunity to work towards his NRL ambitions while his brothers continue their own pursuits.
