The New Zealand Warriors are believed to have commenced talks over a contract extension with the in-form Tanah Boyd.

The halfback spent most of 2025 on the fringe of the Warriors side, shut out by good form from the incumbent halfback Luke Metcalf.

Metcalf's ACL injury at the back-end of the year opened the door for Boyd though, and while the ex-Gold Coast Titan struggled a little through the end of 2025, his form to start 2026 has been tremendous.

The only games the Warriors have lost leading up to Round 8's Anzac Day clash against the Dolphins in Wellington are the two Metcalf played, when he returned from injury and played at five-eighth.

Boyd's form keeping him at halfback has now led to the opening of talks over his future, and while an agreement is still believed to be a little way off, journalist Brent Read said a deal is likely with Boyd showing no desire to leave Auckland.

“I think Tanah Boyd wants to stay at the Warriors," Read said on Triple M's NRL Daily. "That's his preference, and that's who they're negotiating with at the moment.

“He will only move if that deal won't get done."

There has been plenty of speculation that other clubs - whether it be the Perth Bears or ones based in Sydney - could make a play for Boyd who has started to relise his enormous potential this year.

Exactly what a re-signing would mean for Metcalf, who also recently re-signed, remains to be seen though.

He recently suggested his preference is to play at halfback, but with Boyd in such strong form, and not likely to shuffle to the number six, five-eighth could be Metcalf's role for the foreseeable future.

That, despite the fact he was leading the Dally M from the number seven jersey by a considerable distance when the count went behind closed doors last year.

Boyd has been able to negotiate with rival clubs since November 1.
