South Sydney Rabbitohs star Sam Burgess has become the first NRL player to express an interest in the joining the proposed New York based.

An application has been formally lodged by a New York based club to play in the Rugby Football League (RFL), the professional tier in England.

The New York club is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Toronto Wolfpack and will attempt to enter the Championship level in 2019, one tier below the Super League.

Bid co-founder Ricky Wilby has already confirmed that the club are interested in speaking with Jarryd Hayne about a return to the US.

Burgess though is the first player currently in the NRL to publicly declare his interest.

"How good's that?" said 28-year-old Burgess speaking to Fairfax Media.

"New York, I'm sure there'll be plenty of players putting their hands up to go play over there. It would be a great place to live, to play the game, to travel.

"It's pretty exciting. Toronto is a reality, they've attracted some big talent. Dave Taylor's going there next year, big Coaltrain.

"When you're getting to the back end of your career … it's an opportunity … I'll see how my body's holding up."

Burgess is currently contracted to the Rabbitohs until the end of 2018.
