1. Storm (2)
The Storm sits atop the NRL ladder as the competition's only undefeated side. They were made to work for it against a desperate Dogs side but ultimately got the chocolates. Cam Munster is close to the form player of the comp. Cam Smith is now two points shy of the points scoring record. 85% completion, only four penalties conceded, sounding very storm-like. Not their best performance but to come back and win from 12-0 down is very positive.
2. Roosters (3)
Storm/Roosters 1/2, big surprise right? The cream has risen very quickly in 2019. The tri-colours were irresistible on Thursday night in their huge win over the Broncos. Sometimes scorelines lie but the Chooks were worth their seven-try to one win. They ran for almost 800 metres more than the easily outclassed Broncs. Cooper Cronk was his usual class upon his return. Message sent by the premiers.
3. Raiders (4)
The Raiders are flying on the back of their third win from four fixtures. Saturday evening's 30-12 win over the Cowboys may have been their best performance yet. The stats in this game were really close but everything Canberra did they did better than their hosts. The LeiPana combo is firing, combining for three tries. Their left edge also scored two proving they're dangerous everywhere.
4. Bunnies (1)
The Bunnies were delivered a reality check on Saturday in losing to the Sea Eagles. Cody Walker said as much. The golden point loss to a side which made 20 errors shows they have a lot to work on. That said Sam Burgess was huge, Cam Murray continues to make line breaks and Reynolds out kicked DCE. Hardly alarm bells. I loved Walker's honesty on the Matty Johns show. Good maturity.
5. Eels (6)
The Eels bounced back after last week's result against the Roosters. Mitch Moses lead his side to a 12-point win over a Cronulla side coming off a big win. Blake Ferguson is about $1.30 to be the recruit of the year. Parra took their opportunities, scoring tries off Sharks errors on multiple occasions. King Gutho is back! Young Mahoney is providing a solid option in the nine. Good signs for the blue and gold.
6. Dragons (9)
Two in a row for the Red V. Two in a row for Corey Norman. Two weeks in a row Norman's left foot has delivered competition points via a drop goal. Paul Vaughan was massive all game but his setting up the match-winning play was elite. Dufty was suspect under the high ball but threatened all night. That Frizell try was genius. McInnes lead from the front after leading the side out.
7. Warriors (10)
What a difference a week can make. A 91% completion rate is almost unheard of especially for a side that plays as expensive as the Warriors. RTS has to be in the discussion for the game's best fullback. I'm a big fan of young Harris-Tavita. Bunty Afoa again provided great impact off the bench. As usual for the Warriors, the struggle seems to be consistently playing well. They have s big opportunity against a battered Souths side coming up.
8. Sea Eagles (11)
Manly just beat the competition leaders despite an injury to their star fullback a horror completion rate of 58% ... Not bad. DCE iced a game that will provide big confidence. Kapow is back to his damaging best, powering for over 200 metres. Manlys season really hinges on Turbos injury. In just 41 minutes he scored a try, made two line breaks and almost 100 run metres. Fainu is lethal off the bench.
9. Tigers (5)
The Tigers were two minutes away from a morale-boosting win. Instead, they are shaking their collective head and wondering what might have been. This wasn't the greatest game but with all the build-up re 'revenge', I bet McGuire is glad it's over. Esan Marsters is a nightmare to tackle. Five tackle breaks and 62 post-contact metres is a perfect snapshot. The Tigers are getting good value out of their bench.
10. Sharks (7)
John Morris will want to forget this past Saturday night real quick. An injury in warm up to Shaun Johnson completely shattered a side already missing Moylan, Graham and Gallen. Young Flanagan did well on short notice and Bronson Xerri justified the pre-debut hype but otherwise, this game was about injuries. Their completion rate was well up but the creativity wasn't there.
11. Panthers (15)
A Nathan Cleary conversation and field goal ended a horror week on a high for the Panthers. Dylan Edwards put a bumpy game behind him by scoring in the 78th minute. This is a game Penrith wanted done due to all the off-season carry on. That 60% completion rate was dire. 16 errors too. They can consider themselves lucky but the points are banked.
12. Broncos (8)
To say the Broncos were awful would, in no way, be unkind or untruthful. They were AWFUL. Nikorima and Milford need to take control of this side. Darius Boyd would want to call in sick for the video day this week after his "effort" to save a try. They made 700 fewer metres than the Roosters. 700!?! Corey Oates recorded negative points on NRL fantasy. Matt Gillett made 60 metres. That's criminal for one of the game's elite forwards.
13. Bulldogs (14)
The Dogs move up a spot despite losing due to one hell of an effort. A horror attempted conversion away from taking the Storm to golden point. Jayden Okunbor is an absolute monster. The Storm couldn't keep him under wraps. 290 metres, a try and three line breaks. His spot on the wing is locked in. Jack Cogger played very well coming in for Foran. I like the look of Meaney.
14. Knights (13)
I hope Jesse Ramien had his flu shot as the guy is catching a cold out wide for the Knights. The 'throw it to Ponga' game plan is not working. They need to find a five-eighth option before their season goes up in smoke. I hate to sound so negative but their only win came via an Edrick Lee intercept when the Sharks had a four on two. Ponga and Klemmer were great, otherwise not a lot to write home around here.
15. Cowboys (12)
The post JT era is off to a difficult beginning. I'd expect the Cowboys will move heaven and Earth to bring Valentine Holmes to the club if rumours of his return home are true. Morgan is playing a lone hand behind a horribly beaten forward pack. They've shipped 72 points, at home, over the past 160 minutes. Tough to win games with that stat.
16. Titans (16)
The Titans now sit 0-4 after the opening month of action. Ash Taylor and Tyrone Roberts both finally have 80 minutes under their belts. AJ Brimson played 29 minutes. That HAS to be 80 moving forward. Cartwright and Proctor both played 80 minutes yet combined for 115 metres. Those are deplorable numbers for their two wide running threats. It's frustrating watching this side.
“Manly just beat the competition leaders”
Hmmm, Pretty sure that the competition leaders last week were the same as this week – Melbourne Storm. Manly beat Souths who I believe were in third place (Memory could be wrong here) but they definitely weren’t the competition leaders.
The Cowboys fall from grace has been huge. Whilst Thurston would be a big loss for any team, I think we should be looking else where for the real problem. The loss of Thurston is no bigger blow than the loss of Cronk for Melbourne but they still made the GF last year. Now the Storm have doubled down on that loss with Slater going the same way. Are they languishing at the foot of the table because they lost 2 big “Thurston” calibre players ….. err no!
Like the Storm, the Cowboys have known that Thurston would be retiring, it was no big surprise, it wasn’t a sudden big injury, it wasn’t a sudden defection it was an age driven, wear and tear retirement that could and should have been planned for. I am not saying that they should be at the top of the competition, what I am saying is that they shouldn’t be at the bottom blaming the loss of Thurston. Someone at the Cowboys hasn’t been doing their job properly and that is where the light needs to shine.
As the cream rises to the top the crap sinks to the “S” (ouffffths) Bend.๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ช๐๐
LOL. You should know better than than the rest of us Woody that the best accountant wins.
I like that butters๐๐๐๐soufffths have got the advantage though, with being ranked 4th on the TPA list Chooks are only 8th ish
